So Kate has quite recently begun to express an enjoyment of digging at things.  Blankets, towels, grass mats… me. And given she doesn’t show that much interest in toys, I’d like to encourage this new interest of hers.  Unfortunately Spencer pees on all of those things, except me thankfully.  I was contemplating making her a diggy box, as she also seems to enjoy shredding things too (Spencer usually pees on anything shreddable too, ahem brat.) but I’m pretty sure Spencer will pee in that too.  It’s amazing his litter habits are so good given how easily confused he is on the subject.  So, do your bunnies pee in their diggy boxes and if so how do you make sure that they’re easy to clean up?  Or do you just make the whole thing disposable and pitch after a few days?

I think it’s easiest to make it disposable.
What about having a diggy box in a cordoned off area, that she can visit but he can’t? It could be her special alone place, and if she likes that, she would indicate she wanted to be there by letting you know. I’m reminded of Vivian’s box that Jack never could get into. Just an idea.

Momo did a good job of destroying her own diggy box and making an even worse mess with it. So what I do now is take a good size box for her to fit in and just plop a phone book on the bottom. Works well for her. And a little less messy for me. Also, she is less inclined to potty in it.

I got a huge storage container, cut a hole in it, put some litter in it and filled it with hay. This was working great until Minnie really started to dig in it. I use stove pellets and they turn to dust and Minnie dug all the way to the bottom and got dust everywhere. Now I just put hay in it. Much easier to clean up but it smells faster and hay is not very absorbent so it needs to be cleaned at least every other day.

I got a laundry basket for my boys. It’s got a carpet on the bottom because neither pee on the carpet. I shred up the phone book and put it in there. You could do hay, but that always seems to encourage my guys to potty in there. :/

Probably be easier to dispose of it – but you could use a plastic container to hold the dig materials and then shredded paper and just pitch the paper when it gets soiled and wipe off the plastic. Would probably be the cheapest solution. My buns don’t mess the dig box though, I use balled up phone book pages.

Rucy would not pee in it and she was the busiest digger of all! Jack would get in there and dig slightly, but he was confused by the whole diggy box concept and preferred to just watch Rucy. He’d pee in it.

One thing you can do is put some vinyl/ plastic – like contact paper (what you can put in drawers. Just line the bottom and sides of the box with that. So that at least if they did pee in it, it wouldn’t soak through to the rug and you could just dump out the contents, wipe off and start again.

How about making it fragrant by putting dried herbs or dry willow leaves in with the digging material? Maybe that would distract Spencer enough to recognize it’s not a litter box. Also make it more interesting to dig in. For digging material, I think you should use the same stuff your laptop bag is made out of. They obviously like that!!
