        Hi there,

I have a female bunny (Rummy) who is about 2 1/2 years old and is neutered. I moved houses about 2 months ago and started using a litter tray in her hutch after that which she took to like a duck takes to water! It was great!

She’s decided to change her mind now though, and is urinating and leaving pellets both in the litter tray and all around it. The place I live now has an enclosed backyard, so on nice days when I’m home I have started to let her run around the yard for the day. The litter tray problems have been happening pretty much ever since she has been able to run around the backyard more often.

Could this cause the problem? If so, why? How do I get her to start using her litter tray again? It’s not a drastic problem, but it’s so much harder to clean up after her now!!!

Outdoor rabbits are harder to litter train since they can go wherever outside, they can’t relate “inside I have to use the litter tray!”. If you let her be outside a lot, she won’t understand why it’s OK out there but not in your house.

Also, I wouldn’t suggest letting her have run of a yard without you standing OUT there with her, even if you’re home. Hawks, cats, foxes, dogs, etc are all predators that would love to get their claws / teeth on a rabbit as easy to grab as one fenced in. Even standing outside, predator birds pose a very real risk for pet rabbits, they can and will snatch up a pet animal with the owner outside. Not to mention buns love to dig and if she digs under your fence she could escape.

I would try an enclosed bunny safe outdoor pen with a litter box and see if that helps.

Is it possible to bring her inside? If so, litterbox training will go more smoothy and consistently. That being said, sometimes if you give your bunny too much freedom too fast (example: going from being in the cage all the time to having free fun of the house) can make bunny confused and forget where the litterbox is or can’t make it on time. This is generally during run time though.

If she’s having the problems while inside her cage then there a lot of potential reasons why she’s not having good litterbox habits, especially if she’s an outdoor bunny. Stress is a major cause for degrading litterbox habits. Even if bunnies are locked in a cage predators can still come up and scare them (even to the point of death from fright, which is surprisingly common). Changes in routine (like moving) also can cause stress. Did this problem start after the move? I’ve found this page very helpful with my own rabbits: page: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/litter.html#outside-box if you scroll down to the bottom it talks about what might be causing a bun to stop having good litterbox habits. Sorry if this doesn’t help :/ sometimes bunnies can be very confusing

Good luck! And welcome to BinkyBunny (:
