Oh no, my little girl’s going through a false pregnancy.  I feel so bad.

A couple days ago she was acting a little strange.  She didn’t want to be pet and even turned down her greens.  I asked my son if she was acting weird during the day.  He said no…. apart from trying to tear his shirt off his body (ok, you have to admit that’s funny).  Turns out she was nesting like crazy.  And I do mean crazy.  Any fabric or paper near her gets attacked and dragged under the fireplace.  She’s completely obsessed and only stops for water here and there.

Then yesterday she started pulling her fur out.  Watching her is so painful. Here she is, manicallly building a nest, pulling out fur and no babies.  She gets spayed in a week, but it’s not soon enough.  This is my fault for bringing Kevin (neutered male that’s housed seperately) into the house.  Does anyone know how long this lasts?

This is her nest.  You can even see the crazed look in her eye.

Thanks Jaguara, that actually helped a lot. All the info I found only talked about what to do if they’re REALLY pregnant. It’s good to know that she’s coming to the end of it.

It will happen. I’m glad that she is getting spayed next week! It will make her so much more happy and not so inclined to make nests! I was so scared that I would see Chacha make a nest, but she never did.

From my POV, It sounds like she is really really hormonal…

Has she been near Kevin? Even rabbits that are single (and unspayed) do have false pregnancies.. it happens. Spaying will clear it up and I do not think you will see that again!

                *hugs*

Thanks LoveChaCha, I really could use some reassurance. She IS very hormonal, always had big mood swings. Her and Kevin are in the same room, but they haven’t been “together.”

She’s still pulling out her fur and even causing some bald patches on her legs.  Is it supposed to get this bad? She came to get treats from me last night and had a bit of fur sticking out of her mouth.  I went to pull it out so she could eat her raisin and I kept pulling and pulling… She had this huge pile of  fur in her mouth.  Now I’m afraid she’ll ingest too much and get a blockage.

I haven’t had a rabbit going through a false pregnancy (or real one) but you may want to give her more nesting materials for the time being. My thought is that if she has more materials to build her nest, she’ll be less inclined to pull fur.

I think it is normal, from what I have read. The last forum I was on was supposed to be a pet bunny forum, but was about 80% breeders (which is why I left) and they got very proud of their females for pulling a lot of fur.

Sorry she’s going through this must be awful to see your bun so fixated on nesting when she has nothing to nest over. Maybe call the vet and see if they could suggest something to help prevent a blockage while she’s going through this?

Aw poor bun! I bet that is nerve racking to watch her do that! *hugs* hope she stops pulling her fur! I agree with stickerbunny is there anyway to get something from the vet just to be safe?

Oh no! My nikka was also doing the same thing before she got spayed. Thankfully her appointment is in one week! As far as I know, there isn’t much to do besides giving her nesting material so she doesn’t pull her own fur. it’s a very hormonal act so she will probably keep doing it. Try to keep her distracted as much as you can when you’re home, I was lucky since Nikka has Rorschach to keep her company and bother her =P

It is so hard to watch though *hugs*. As for blockage prevental, I would load on the hay and for now, no pellets. lots of veggies and when she goes in for her appointment, maybe you can ask your vet for critical care in case she starts acting like she has a blockage? it’s a good thing to have on hand, regardless.

My girl Oreo did the same a few weeks before her spay. She was a hormonal nutcase, so much worse than our boy was. It was around the same time we had visited Blu the first time..so we had the scent of a male bunny on us. Since your girl will be spayed soon I wouldn’t worry too much unless she stops eating, drinking or pooping. Oreo also carried around her little monkey in her mouth, running back and forth with it incessantly. But after the spay she barely touches the monkey (or my husbands leg…lol) So she’ll be much calmer afterwards… Hugs to her and best of luck with the surgery.

We just adopted coconut and have had her 2 weeks today. We woke up to find her cage littered with tufts of fur. We tried to feel for babies but we couldn’t tell if anything was there. We’re hoping it’s a false pregnancy. Trying to read up on what we should do

If she’s having babies they should be due soon, within days, and you should be able to feel them like little lumps in her tum. Nesting is the last step before the babies are born. If it’s a false pregancy, you do nothing, just wait til it passes. You can give her a nest box (cardboard f ex) and let her build a nest, whether she’s having real babies or false non-existent babies, being able to build a nest will be calming for her.

False pregnancies are quite common in girl buns and they always resolve on their own. Don’t worry about her pulling her fur out, the hormones (this is hormone-driven even if it’s a pseudo pregnancy) make the hair on her chest loosen so she isn’t hurting her self pulling it out.

                                    Hi Cookiepopo

She is likely about to have a litter of kits or already has. Did you check in the nest of fur?

Here is a link to some helpful information if she has had a litter:  DOMESTIC BABY BUNNIES AND THEIR MOM

Cookiepopo, I just wanted to add, if Popo has not been desexed, be sure not to allow him to be with Cookie. A female rabbit can become pregnant again straight after having babies. If he has been recently desexed, he can still have viable sperm 4-6 weeks after and can impregnate an intact female rabbit.
