Hey guys, my 12 week old lionhead bunny has been scratching. I wouldn’t saying he is scratching alot but I would say it’s more than normal. I am not sure if rabbits just scratch but the main places he scratches are like bellow his ear. I also noticed that on his back he is missing some hair. When I look it looks like he almost has dry skin. If anyone can tell me what this patch might be that would be great. He eats, drinks, and plays like any normal crazy young bunny.

Well you’ll want to schedule a vet appointment anyways-any new pet should see a vet so the vet can address your questions. It’s also a good time to establish a healthy baseline so your vet knows what’s normal for your bunny when he is ill, and you can grill your vet (if you’ve not used him before for buns) on how the spay/neuter will be.
We certainly cannot diagnos anything here, and there could be many reasons why he’s itching. For the patch on the back of the ear-is it symmetrical? My lionhead has a very bald spot behind her ears-that’s just her and possibly the breed or poor breeding. But if it’s new or unusual for your bun he should see a vet. Keep us posted!

It could be fur mites. They cause dandruff in the fur. Not anything serious but your vet will have to diagnose and can treat him.

It could just be a little dry skin, but it could be fur mites–especially if the dandruffy bare patch looks a bit scaley/scabby and if he’s losing little fur clumps with a dandruff piece attached… Definitely worth taking him into the vet for the diagnosis–if it is fur mites, it’s pretty cheap and easy to treat it with a rabbit-friendly product like Revolution.

Yes, fur mites is easy to treat however if it’s left untreated your rabbit could be suffering. Mites can get out of hand when left to “feed” on your rabbit. It is actually a pretty big concern that needs treatment.
