Well I don’t know if it was the bonding or the stress of going to the vet for his check up last week, but Mimzy’s nose is back to being snotty again. In fact, this time it seems worse to me, the goo being opaque and white, whereas it was not quite that color before.

He’s also having peeing issues again. I’m wondering if it’s related to the sneezing…you know how some of us old folks have to cross our legs when we feel a sneeze coming? lol….

        So naturally I’m worried.

Could this be the same old trouble brewing up again? Or something new? I’ll be calling the vet tomorrow morning and seeing if they want to start him on another course of antibiotics (hopefully without a visit as he was just in there a week ago-that was a $600 trip!) since Dr. B. (his dentist) said he’d probably have to be on some kind of antibiotic maintenance the rest of his life.

Any ideas what would cause white discharge?

Poor Mimzy. And you. It’s so stressful and upsetting when no matter how great you take care of them, they still have lots of problems.

I’m sorry that I can’t remember, but has he ever had a Pasteurella culture? It just really sounds like Pasteurella to me. As far as I know, white discharge usually indicates an infection of some sort.

I will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers. (((((Bunny Hugs))))))

Awwww Poor Mimz {{Mimz}} Hugs for you. I’m not sure what it could be, it does sound a bit like it did last time though. Perhaps just a simple reoccurance?

Well I decided to cut out his sugary treats on a whim, as I think I’ve seen him develop nasal problems before while eating these (he gets a few dried blueberries in the evening and sometimes a craisin just because Pip is getting one) and I haven’t heard the sneezing today, nor does he appear to have the snot coming.
But he’s been low, activity wise and emotionally. I think it may just be one of his ‘bad days’…but I’m going to make an appointment for him for his favorite doctor and see if we can get him on a scheduled regimen when he needs medicine.
I’m also slowly getting him used to having some kind of bedding mat in his night pen without chewing it to pieces. (using one of Fiver’s old UK beddies…thoroughly washed out of course) He seems to really enjoy the comfort of something soft under him (when he’s not trying to tear it up) and this is a big thing for him! But it makes him too warm right away and so he’ll start pushing it away and ripping at it.

Does anyone know of something soft that is also cool to lay upon instead of warm? He seems to get overheated so easily.

Well I now have an appointment to take both Mimzy AND Fiver in…Fiver is displaying both nasal symptoms and perhaps has tooth issues. We’ll see their favorite doctor early Sunday morning.
Mimzy seems to be having trouble keeping regular poops going. I am not entirely sure that fresh greens from the yard are any good for them any longer. I’m wondering if, as the sun wanes and the hayseed and dandelions being to look spotty and seem wilted by weather if they are more prone to slow a bunny’s gut rather than assist it?
The hay that Fiver’s been eating is becoming increasingly dry as the year turns colder and he got a little blocked up this last week, so I’ve given him a bit of canned pumpkin again. So far, so good and no sign of mushy cecals. He sure has missed this! First time in a while I’ve seen the ‘bunny butt twitch’!

Anyway, if anyone has some spare vibes to send our way for a good report and better feeling bunnies, we’ll take ’em!

soft and cool: might try a flannel sheet, MM. You can pick up a cheap twin sized top sheet, or just a 100% cotton flannel fabric yard at Walmart. They are very, very thin (not like a flannel shirt or throw) but just a wee bit soft. Sheets generally stay cool.

Flannel sheets? Oh wow, that does sound good…lol…not just for them, but for me too! Thanks Pam! I’ll give that a try.

Well, Mimz is on a 0.6 ml twice per day dose (total of a 36 ml bottle) of Trimeth Sulfate and Fiver will need to be scheduled for a spur trim. >.< The tooth issues just never end in this house! 0_o;; Since I prefer the specialists' approach with this, we'll go see the inimitable Dr. B with the out of this world surgery across town. I'll make the appointment tomorrow. This is good news that Fiver is only now showing spurs, as his last dental was a year ago October. Knowing how she works, he won't need another for awhile.

We got to see our favorite vet today. She always does so well with them. Even though she may be leaving the practice in a few years, she claims she will be available for special visits with preferred patients, and she included my zoo in that group. I was thrilled.

Just as the tech and I were weighing Mimzy, he had a wee, so the scale got wet. Embarrassing! No urine burn though. >_< He has lost a little weight (nothing significant) since his last visit…which was only on the 11th.

Fiver had a nail trim, much needed, so he got to be out in the xpen when we got home for most of the day. He has a much easier time navigating the linoleum. The difference between how he investigates his surroundings and how Mimzy is just a lump that hides in the corner is striking. I have to wonder if some of Mimzy’s hesitancy is from his poor rear legs. He was skidding all over when I brought him out of his carrier. Still thinking about trying a bond with the two boys before I cement anything with Pip.

I figured Fiver needed some special time out because doctor had to pull (gently) on his ears to see in them with the otoscope. He didn’t like that and I had to explain why. She did try to be extra gentle, but Fiver just tenses right up when someone touches his face or ears.

It’s always good to hear that, for the most part, they are both relatively healthy. Since we’ve settled on pasturella for Mimzy’s recurring illnesses (still no real diagnosis on the puddling, but Dr. H figures that’s his arthritis) it is going to be easier to get him treated and keep him from having too many stressful vet visits.
Cherry flavor this time! No nasty ‘tuna Baytril!’ ^_^

I’m glad your visit went well. You’re lucky your vet is open on Sunday. No vets are open here Sunday (and that’s usually the day my buns pick for an emerg visit).

How old is Fiver? Sorry, hard to keep so many BBers bunnies info straight!

Is the vet just assuming it’s Pasteurella or has it been diagnosed in a culture?

mmmm…cherry flavour! Bindi has banana bread which he doesn’t seem to mind too much.

Well after his first dose of the TMS today, this evening he seems a bit uncomfortable and I’ve seen the first uneaten cecal ever from him.
I did miss his morning dose of metacam though, I’m trying to reset his schedule as I was giving it later at night than I want to stay awake for. (I’m too bleary eyed at 3 AM to be dosing meds.)
I did try to give probiotics today, but he hates the taste/texture and spits it right back out.
Anyone ever have trouble with TMS and their bunny?

ETA: Sorry LPT, hit send and missed answering your post. Yeah, weekends are the only time I can see my favorite doc now and she isn’t really taking any new surgeries, hence why we’ll be going across town.

Fiver is now approximately three years old. (his coming home day was last week, I’ve just been so busy I haven’t posted it)

Mimzy’s ‘diagnosis’ was courtesy of the associate vet that Dr. B (vet dentist) worked with on his teeth last month. They didn’t do a culture, but she is apparently as certain as possible having read his files and seeing him without doing the culture. I had wanted him swabbed and titered while he was under but somehow that went amiss.

Since stress does seem to bring on his symptoms and most of them are respiratory in nature, that’s what we’re going with and treating him accordingly. I suppose the next time he needs anesthesia, I can have all the tests run to be sure. As it is, we’re still waiting on the culture for his ‘ear fungus’. >.<

My vet said that TMS is gentler on their stomach than Baytril.

Didn’t you do a nasal culture at one time on Mimzy?

Yes we did, three years ago when he first had recurring nasal issues. It came back as somewhat inconclusive, although he did test positive for something called branhamella. Nothing we threw at it would make it stay away, whatever it was. At the time the vet wasn’t willing to put him through another deep nasal swab under anesthesia or me through the expense of another test with how little result we were getting.
I’ve gotten so many conflicting opinions on him I just can’t keep them all straight. It doesn’t help that we are losing the doc who knows him best and when I have emergencies I will be stuck with having to introduce him to someone new and give the histories all over again, if he lives another 3-4 years.

Even today, a different doctor from the same practice apparently thought I was doing too much by giving him TMS (after three doses-because he has some mushy cecals-she wants me to stop it and leave him for a few days…what?? and have his germs build up a resistance so she can throw some other higher priced abx at me??) and told me I should take him to the holistic vet instead for hyperbaric chamber therapy. I think that’s what she was talking about…apparently the holistic vet has an oxygenation chamber and she believed some high oxygen therapy would be the trick for his nose. *shrugs* Anytime I voiced an opinion, she either brushed it off or acted like I was annoying the heck out of her for even asking. I don’t have good history with her though, so I am just flustered.

I would just like to keep his more bothersome symptoms down. It doesn’t help to have him either not feel good in his gut due to the flora being killed off, nor does it help that he won’t eat because his nose is stuffed up. We can’t win this war, I just want to claim a few skirmishes.

This sounds so like my buns and i just posted under pasturella. Only one had a white/opaque discharge but the culture did show pasturella and it is clearing up with baytril.

THAT is awesome!! What a great vet

We had a sulfate based antibiotic here that did cause a little bit of loose stool and I think it’s in the family but want’s TMS…cannot remember what it was…my clinic uses a lot of drugs that are made in Quebec and they are all french…anyways I think any antibiotic can cause tummy trouble in any animal so he may just be sensitive to it? Hopefully it stabilizes soon

I did try to give probiotics today, but he hates the taste/texture and spits it right back out.

I’m wondering……if you put it on his paws..well with their incredibe urge to be tidy and neat, maybe he’d lick it off?
