I have an 8 week old English Spot that I took to the vet recently for a sneezing problem. He’s on antibiotics now and everything, but the entire point of this post is because of his weight.

He weighs 1.3 lbs and it has me worried  WHat kinds of things would you guys recomend feeding him to help put some more weight on him? And how much should he weigh at this age??

Unless the vet said he is underweight, I wouldn’t try to fatten him too much. At 8 weeks, most buns are still itty bitty. He’ll grow fast, don’t worry. Just make sure he has alot of healthy pellets, tons of hay, and at 12 weeks start slowly introducing veggies

I would offer unlimited pellets. Oxbow has an alfalfa pellet that my baby bun loves. Also, he is young enough for alfalfa hay, though I give my girl a variety of hay, she loves oat hay!

I started giving Tillie veggies at 8 weeks on the advice of the vet. I wonder if I was given bad advice? She has never had any issues and gobbled them up!

I was told 12 weeks, as many baby buns aren’t quite adjusted to solid food only at earlier ages, and can get upset tummies that young.

They told me he was underweight..so I sit around worried about him all day

And they told me to start introducing him to veggies so I did, and he seems to be doing pretty well on them..haha. And he eats both his pellets and his hay

Make sure he has all the pellets his little heart desires, thats the best way to gain weight as his age

Well that’s different-if they told you he was underweight-and it’s a very good rabbit vet

I would offer unlimited alfalfa-that’s high calorie and you can encourage eating by adding a handful frequently. Ensure your pellets are alfalfa based as well as that will mean they are also higher in calories. If you are feeding veggies yet, I would not adjust those as they can get upset tummies from dietary changes (new veggies/new amounts) so I would keep what you are feeding in terms of veggies the same.

Did the vet have an idea why he is underweight? Did you just get him from somewhere not feeding him correctly? I almost wonder if they should check for internal parasites?

Just having him on a healthy diet SHOULD help him to gain weight.

Since your vet told you he is underweight, did he have any suggestions for you as far as diet? And did you set-up a second, “follow-up” appt to have him weighed and evaluated again in a month or two? If he is not gaining weight at the follow-up appt, there may be something else going on such as an internal parasite.

Veggies can be fed starting when rabbits eat regular food as long as they tolerate them okay. If your vet says at 8 weeks to introduce veggies, that is fine.
