I don’t know exactly what that second ingredient is, but I’ve never seen the first one in simethicone drops for babies before, and since it sounds like xylitol, I am afraid to use this for the bunnies. I can’t seem to find much about it online…does anyone know if it is toxic to them? (Xylitol can drop an animal’s blood sugar in an hour to lethal levels.) And if so…where will I find gas drops for them now?

          It’s a sweetener (sugar alcohol).

Anything ending in lose usually indicates a sugar.

Neither one is a sugar. A sugar alcohol (Maltitol) is not a sugar. And Hypromellose is a food additive, it’s used as a thickener.

Okay…but is it one of those harmful sweeteners in animals, like xylitol?

Well, according to this website, no.
                  http://www.agilepooch.com/dogstuff/xylitol.html

Also, if you look up the chemical structure, Maltitol is a much larger molecule than Xylitol. The reason Xylitol is so dangerous to dogs is because it is quickly absorbed (in humans, it is slowly absorbed). I will keep looking.

Thanks LBJ. I had the hub get me a different bottle today. I had run out of my simethicone liquid that I’d been giving the buns and bought a different brand. That was the one that said maltitol. I didn’t remember seeing that ingredient on my regular brand, but didn’t have the box it came in any longer, so I couldn’t check it against the new bottle. Turns out when I got the one hubby bought me (back to my old brand) it has maltitol in it…so I guess it doesn’t hurt the buns, becasue I’ve been giving them this one…unless my regular brand has changed sweeteners.

Whatever happened to saccharin? I know they told us for years that would give us cancer, but I would think it’d be safer in products we use for our animals than these new alcohol sugars.

And thanks for the site too…I’d read that one, but didn’t see anything conclusive saying the maltitol was safe.

Saccharin actually does cause cancer in rats, so i wouldn’t want to try it on my buns.

Maltitol on the other hand, had the side effect of making the bones in the rats stronger. No cancer. So maybe thats why it is used, it helps make baby’s bones stronger? At least, thats what I gleaned from all those weird scientific reports I found on it…

MimzMum – It just says this:

In humans (and apparently in cats), Xylitol is absorbed slowly and thus is not toxic. In dogs, on the other hand (and perhaps rabbits and ferrets as well), it is absorbed extremely quickly.

…the sugarless products that include Xylitol usually also include other sugar alcohols, with names like Sorbitol, Mannitol, Glycerol, Maltitol, and Other-things-ending-in-ol. Of these, the only one that is toxic to dogs is Xylitol.

Hmm, I don’t have access to this article (even through my school library). I’m guessing because it is so old (1983). The abstract says maltitol will be digested and utilized by man, rat, and rabbit. What an interesting way to put it. LOL

Well it was a short read. lol…Didn’t say much that meant anything to me.
I would guess if it’s in the brand I’d bought before, it’s okay to use now. I’ll call my vet though in the morning and make sure.
