        Hi,

I am the proud mother of my new boy felix… I am also a new bunny mom! I have to say I in LOOOOOOOVE with my little guy, but i am afraid that I might be one of those moms who  can not say no to snacks. His feeding is as follows… in the morning I fill one bowl with bunny feed, one with fresh veggies or fruit, felix gets a treat when I see him use the litterbox, then when I cook I might give him peices of veggies…, other times he kind of expects treats or snacks during the course of the day and night… please HELPPPP! Am I a bad mommy ??? Do I over feed my bunny??

How old is your bunny? By “bowl of bunny feed” do you mean pellets, or hay? What are you using as treats?

            How old is he?

First, I would check out the diet section in the link at the top of the page, it will give you very good advice. For a baby bun an unlimited amount of pellets is ok, but for an adult it’s recommended to be at or under 1/4c per 5lbs of weight.

Many of us here give large quantities of veggies so I think it’s hard to give too much there. You do need to watch out for fruit as it’s high in sugar and more of a treat than a regular meal item.

Bunnies always act like they’re starving and many will eat anything you are willing to feed them, but don’t be fooled!

Fruit should be kept at a minimum. It has a lot of sugar and can cause a chubby bunny.

For adult buns, hay should be unlimited–you want hay to make up the majority of their diet, because it’s important for keeping their teeth and GI tract healthy. Greens and veggies (with some exceptions that are not bunny-safe) can be quiet generous, provided they’re also eating enough hay. It’s good to introduce new greens carefully, because some bunnies have more sensitive stomachs than other. I’ll often give Capt. Danger vegetable “snacks” while I’m cooking, but if he gets a lot of these snacks, I cut back on his dinner “salad” to make sure he eats enough hay.

Fruit should be considered a treat and given sparingly and in small quantities. Too much fruit can lead to imbalances in their GI tract, and it might also prevent them from eating enough hay… We had this problem with our previous bunny

Pellets – for Capt. Danger, we consider them a “treat” as well. He gets 1 Tbls. each morning. He LOVES them, but again, we want to make sure he’s eating enough hay.

As you can tell… hay is KEY!
