A member has reported that there are a number of wild rabbits in the Leybourne area of Kent showing signs of myxomatosis.

No doubt  our members  are very much aware of the dangers of this dreadful disease, and the need to vaccinate on a six monthly basis.  However , each month new rabbit owners join the association and the first alert service, so we would like to advise them to ensure that their bunnies  vaccinations are up to date.   The annual vaccination for Viral Haemorrhagic disease is just as important.

I live in Essex, so thanks for the heads up! Will let my fellow rabbit owners know, although my bunny is indoors I’d still rather he was protected for when he goes on runs in the garden!

            Thank you, RWAF.
For those who live in the US, I want to note that vaccinations are done in Europe etc. but not in this country. So you’re not missing it from your vet and don’t need to run there for one.
If an outbreak is detected in the USA, I believe we would get an alert from someone thoughtful, like RWAF, and be able to advise from there.

Anna W, Myxi can be spread by mites, which can be brought in on hay so indoor buns are actually no safer than those living outside. All need to be vaccinated.

RabiitPam, sadly, only Europe has Myxi vaccines. There have, I understand been representations made to ask for Myxi and VHD vaccinations in the USA but because the European rabbit (pet rabbits) aren’t native, the vaccinations are not permitted. Australia has VHD vaccination but not Myxi though there are pressure groups trying to have that changed for pets.

I post these Alerts to several other Yahoo groups and about 20 forums to ensure the warnings are spread as far as possible.

A member of one of the forums PMd me with this message just a few minutes ago.

              >>Just had a message on Twitter to say there is also more – Between Ashford and Folkestone, Kent Junction 10-12 on M20, also on A20 same area<<

I went back to the forums to post the update and found on one that it is very widespread in Kent as reported by one forum member and also it seems in East Yorkshire as reported by another.
