I understand that it’s important that buns eat lots of hay but what if a bun rather eats hay than (all) vegetables? Would this be an issue? Do I need to take hay away to “force” eating veges?

Hay is preferable to veggies. Don’t take away hay. What kind of veggies are you trying?

If your bun isn’t eating veggies, you may need to increase pellets to make up for the nutrients he/she is missing out on.

I would try different types until you found something they like. Hay is definitely the most important, but veggies are so much healthier than pellets and they provide more fiber and help with hydration of the GI tract.

Oh I’ve found preferable vegetables. It’s just that she rather eat her hay instead. When it’s feeding time, when I put out the veges, she hops right into the box to eat hay instead of vegetables. She likes hay more than pellets too.

As for what vegetables I’ve given: broccoli, different types of lettuce, parsley, cillantro, carrots, mint, watercress, basil, dandelion, bok choy, kale, sage, chard,  spinach… almost everything

My Powder is like that – he will happily ignore veggies some days and go for hay instead, so weird. He also never finishes his pellets, even though I give him less than recommended for his weight (since he never finishes it anyway), because he’d rather eat the hay. I found it helped to feed the veggies in a room there is no hay in, so I feed him his veggies in the morning in the living room. I used to give them by the bird cage/computers but he’s starting to bond to my mini rex girl through the baby gate and prefers to lay against the gate, so now I give him his vegs on his side of the gate and her vegs go on her side of the gate and they eat breakfast together that way. Pellets he gets at night before bed time, he’ll munch on them more at night than during the day.

Maybe try giving the veggies when the hay is almost gone, like before you add more? Not sure if that would help, just an idea
