Hey guys, I have done some reading on here about smelly urine and I am having this problem.  My male rabbit is healthy, not neutered yet and his pee smells pretty bad, and yes he is litter trained.  I change his litter bedding 2 and sometimes 3 times a day because of the strong smell.  Right now I am using Carefresh Bedding and its becoming expensive, but the others Ihave used are not as good.  So I read about using chlorophyll in the water.  But no one has said how much is a safe amount to use in a certain amount of water.  Any suggestions?

Chlorophyll may help a little, but it’s not going to completely cover the smell of an unneutered bunny. I would neuter him as the first step. Also, as you said, Carefresh bedding is expensive and does nothing to absorb smells. Look into a wood pellet or aspen bedding for better odor absorption.

Him being unaltered is the reason his smell is so strong, getting that done will help a lot. Wood pellets (like feline pine) are what I use for my female and I can’t even really smell her litter box, it’s great at absorbing the smell and turns to sawdust when it gets really wet, so super easy to clean as well. Also, very cheap since you can just buy wood stove pellets (without the accelerants!) for $4-$6 for a 50lb bag usually. Some rabbits won’t accept it though since it does have a smell to it, my male refuses. I used carefresh at first but it was so expensive – $13 for a 50L bag at stores here and my buns love a clean box so I went through that bag so fast and just had to find a cheaper solution.

There is also some controversy about putting anything in the water that might alter the taste. If he doesn’t like the new taste, that might stop him from drinking and the most important thing is that he stays hydrated. Especially now if you’re in the US and it is HOT!
