heys guys , im new here just been doing some research but cant find a definate answer and thought maybe someone could tell me why or what the difference is in the rabbits from babies to adult when it comes to allergies ? im very allergic to adult rabbits when handling them or even around them , itchy eyes, itchy throat, runny nose ….etc. but yet baby rabbits do not bother me abit untill they are about 6-8 weeks on . im not allergic to ANY other animal period. and its domestic or wild rabbits … so i guess im wondering what is it about them that they have that makes me allergic but only after they are ” out of the baby” stage ? any help or input would be great .. thanks in advance

Are you allergic to timothy hay by any chance?

I am not so sure about the fur thing. I thought that I was allergic to my bunny when I first got her as a baby, but it ended up being the hay. Some people are allergic to animals.

I would get allergy tested for it.

That’s really interesting! I know some people are allergic to some types of rabbits but not others. I always thought it was due to the type of fur. Some specific things people can be allergic to is their saliva, dander, fur and urine. I suppose if they have more saliva on the coat from grooming or more dander by this age they could start a reaction… idk. 6-8 weeks when they wean completely of the milk. Maybe it’s something to do with proteins? The solid food would provide different protein to the milk and this might start to effect their fur. Or it starts to produce some oil on the coat?  Just guessing.   You could test to see if your allergic to the oil from the sebaceous glands I suppose.
