Hello all!  I haven’t been here in ages (which I think means I must be getting good at this!) but I’m in a bit of a pickle today.  I’m house sitting for someone about three and a half hours from home and, natrually, I brought the bunny with me last night.  They don’t have any pets and I forgot to bring her hay.  Naturally, being summer, she’s in the midst of blowing her coat (plus the car ride) and is ingesting too much fur – to the point that her pellets are actually…fuzzy.

Normally, I would just give her some hay to try to alleviate the problem except, like an idiot, I forgot it.  (She hasn’t ever been a particuarly good hay eater – mostly, she likes to chew the tasty tops off and throw the rest around.)

I have yet to find a pet store (or a walmart…or anything) – I don’t want her to develop a blockage but I wont have her home again until Sunday. I’ve read that pineapple can be beneficial to break down the fur - is that a reccomended course of action, or does anyone have any interim suggestions to help maintain her system?

There really isn’t much proof that pineapple works.
I would suggest getting some hay ASAP. Even finding a grocery store (or a one stop shop type of store) that carries even generic brand timothy hay. A rabbit CANNOT go that long without hay

From the sounds of it, your rabbit is in the middle of a shed, and hay is always essential to when a rabbit is shedding.

She definitely cannot go that long without hay. Especially when shedding Try the local grocery store, sometimes int eh pet aisles they will have hay for buns and guinea pigs. Not a sure thing, but worth a try. If they don’t, ask someone that works there where you can buy some. Locals will know any appropriate stores.

Usually if you’re so far out in the country that there aren’t any chain stores around, there will be hay suppliers in the form of farms / feed supply stores. Grab a phone book and start looking things up to find something nearby that has hay.

How is she with eating fresh greens? Wet those and give them to her – they have some fiber – nothing replaces hay of course but giving her lots of greens will help as well.

The deal with pineapple enzymes is not that it breaks down the fur, it breaks down the mucous stuff and like LoveChaCha says, there’s not scientific proof it works and nothing replaces hay.
