Stickers, my female mini-rex used to nibble at timothy and oat hay as well as her alfalfa (she is under a year old by everyones guess, so I give her alfalfa mixed with the other two) before her spay. Since her spay (3 weeks and 2 days ago) she isn’t eating ANY timothy or oat hay, she will grudgingly eat the alfalfa but she doesn’t seem to like it anymore. She devours her pellets and loves her salads still, but not sure why she is against hay all of a sudden? We even got her a huuuge bale of hay that was being cut as we drove past the farm. Thinking maybe she didn’t like the change in hay I put the oxbow back in and she still isn’t that interested. Her pellets are measured out to about 1/8 a cup at 4.2lbs, the guess is she is about 6 months of age (guesstimate). She gets a salad in the morning of all veggies she is used to, but it varies by what I have in the fridge. She gets dandelions occasionally (a couple times a week , as they grow in our yard, pesticide and animal free) and about 1 baby carrot a week.

Any suggestions for making hay more interesting again? I know it’s good for their teeth and digestion to eat it and I can’t have her only eating alfalfa forever and even that is like a kid being forced to eat greens because they can’t have their dessert til they eat the veggies!

Some rabbits can be VERY VERY picky when it comes to hay cuts.

I have a picky rabbit. She turned her nose up to Katyee’s Orchard, and she prefers organic orchard, or American Pet Diner hay. It worried me a bit that she was snubbing hay all of a sudden, as she is a good hay eater.

Do you have any strands of the old hay that you have that you could compare with the new one? I am guessing it is the type of cut that is making her snub it! Fussy bunnies!

Have you tried Orchard Grass? It is very fragrant and soft

I have fussy bunnies too. One day they were happily eating their oat hay and the next day, they treated it like poison. They came around again, though! Have you tried the Oxbow Organic Meadow hay? That is the only hay that they have never turned up their snooty little noses to.

No, they only carry orchard/alfalfa/timothy/oat at our store – maybe i’ll see if I can get a bag of that from a site and see if she likes it Tate.

Chacha, I went back to her old hay (oxbow) to see if she would eat that but she still snubbed it. Don’t have anything left of the old bags though, but same brand/type. Orchard is the only type at the store I haven’t picked up yet to try to get her to eat, next pet store trip!

Yeah, last year, Oxbow had a terrible year for hay. Chacha used to eat it religiously, but the hay got really coarse and hard and she snubbed it. I hope that your bunny eats

Thanks, I hope so too she’s eating her pellets and salads so she isn’t going to starve, but the hay is good for her silly rabbit! My male eats whatever hay I give him – he’s fine with alfalfa (treat), oat, timothy… he doesn’t care as long as it’s grassy. The female though, omg, she is so picky and high maintenance. She came from a neglected home where she was shoved into a small pet store cage and ignored except when the kids wanted to “play” (put stickers and other things on her fur). Now she’s learned she has a real bunny slave and every thing has to be exactly right, or she will not have it.
                  ,
Going to order the new hays on Friday and maybe she’ll decide one of those is one she likes this time.

Aww poor girl I’m so glad she is with you now <3 <3 <3

Yeah, Chacha ONLY adores the soft hays LOL!! The BB store used to have Organic Orchard Grass (which was basically soft stuff) but the company that provided the organic grass went out of business. I had a small bag of American pet diner orchard, and she gobbled it right up o_O;; lol It made me almost cry!

I’m happy to have her – pickiness and all ! lol The lady who took her out of the bad home to foster until adoption (wasn’t through a rescue) had only gotten one email besides mine and the guy wanted her as a “friend” to his “large dog” … ack! She’s got free run of the kitchen/laundry room so she’s happy and the vet says she’s healthy.

Hmm. Soft hay would probably be a hit with her, didn’t know any hays were really soft – when I go out to get fresh grass from the yard (fenced in, no animals, no pesticides and I wash it before they get it) I have to cut the thinner, softer stuff for her and the thicker, crunchier stuff for him. I am sure my neighbors think I am nuts going out and crawling around the yard with a knife trying to find the perfect pieces of grass to hand cut and wrap in a pile in my shirt. lol

LOL, I can totally imagine you crawling on the grass for clippings I do crazy stuff too. I work at a grocery store and my coworkers give me a weird look when I go shopping right after I got off! It calls for bunny food, like they would understand

Orchard is a soft alternative for rabbits. I hope diva doesn’t turn her nose up to it!

Oh boy! O_O;; a friend for a dog? … how odd. I’m super happy the foster chose you!

Yeah, the lady told the guy that she wasn’t comfortable letting the little 4lb bunny be a “friend” for his 50lb+ dog. Can’t imagine what would have happened to her in his house!

Hopefully she doesn’t, she’s such a little princess though. She sleeps on a chair, every little thing I do wrong gets me thumps and foot flicks *sigh* lol

Boyfriends co-workers are cool with the bunnies – his boss has a garden and has been giving us fresh greens every few days for them. He gave us a HUGE bag of greens still on the stem today. Pesticide free, too. She was a fan of that.

Oh yeah, you would think that person would get ANOTHER dog for his dog.. o_o

I have a priness diva too. A few nights ago, I let Chacha play in my room while I slept. I got a bunny on my tummy at 5 am o_o..

I do everything wrong as well! I get footflicks, tail wags, thumps, grunts, you name it She will zoom from my room, to the living room, and back – and THUMPS a few times when she is in my room.. XD LOL

A lot of people that I talk to at work are amazed by how well behaved (most of the time) Chacha bun is, that I can let her free roam while I’m working. I just say “She is like a cat – and she sleeps during the day while I’m at work.”

Hehe yeah – Powder is allowed free run all the time, he doesn’t even have a cage. The only thing I do is block him into the bedroom area (2 bedrooms and one bathroom to run in) when we go out cause there are wires I don’t trust him with (computers!) in the other part of the house. Stickers the little girl is allowed her room + the kitchen and her cage is left open. They’re both pretty well behaved. Everyone is always so shocked and their first response is “eww bunny poo everywhere” and i’m like “they’re litter trained…”. People don’t understand how cat-like bunnies are!

I have had great luck with compressed hay cubes with is hay in cuibe form and all my guys eat this, I have one who will not eat hay full stop unless it is in this form. maybe see if you can find some near you as these are very pellet like in texture and they seem to love these

I wouldn’t suggest hay cubes unless your bun absolutely will NOT eat any other kind of hay. Hay cubes just don’t have the long fiberous strands that bunnies need.

I finally was able to get orchard grass – gonna have to order it online and wait for shipping so will need to plan accordingly for stock – and she LOVES it lol
