My 11 month old Dutch rabbit Sophie has a nasty case of dried poop all around her butt. I’m pretty sure it’s just because of her litter box because she pees in one certain corner of it and I think the pee and poop mixed in the corner has created this problem. I’m so concerned I’ve already ordered a jumbo cat litter box so she will have alot of extra room. As far as litter is concerned I of course use recycled paper pulp litter. As far as I know I think it is the safest option. But to the point I’ve been reading about using corn starch as a way to give a dry bath to remove the dried poop. I could not find BABY corn starch powder, but I did find 100% corn starch powder in the cooking section that I purchased from stop and shop. Before I even open the package I need to know if this is safe of course. Is there a difference between the baby corn starch and normal cooking corn starch that I’ve been hearing about for a dry bath? And what am I looking at for potential danger to her? As in if accidentally ingested or just how to handle the situation as in how to apply and the actual cleansing process alltogether? Thanks in advance. <3

I wish that I knew this for sure. I have never used corn starch and the article I read about says “Baby corn starch” http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/buttbath.html

Until you know for sure I would use the wet method — in the article as well.

Is this a regular thing because it’s not likely that the litterbox would be the issue. Though if the litterbox is too small, it’s best to get a larger one anyway.  Poopy butt is caused my a whole host of issues.  Could be too many treats,  or a diet that is too rich.  A bunny that is overweight (and can’t clean properly).  Could be due to teeth issues or an illness.

How is she acting otherwise? Is she eating and pooping still?

Regular corn starch is perfectly safe if she accidentally ingests some.

Yes I think it’s a combination of too many treats, I also have a huge issue with my grandparents. I know they mean well but they just will not listen to me and I will come home from work to find 7 or 8 yogurt treat on the cage floor. That’s after she ate some too. They also will feed her 12 baby carrots at a time and iceberg lettuce. It just makes me so angry because I know it’s so unhealthy for her and i don’t understand why they won’t listen to me. What should I do? I tried hiding the treats and now they just over feed her carrots and lettuce.

You should start by throwing away the yogurt treats because they are never ok for rabbits.

The yogurt treats aren’t good for bunnies, so start by tossing those. Once they’re gone, they won’t be able to feed them. As far as the carrots, can you prepare a little snack baggie with her “portion” for the day? Once they’re gone, that’s it til tomorrow.

                    That’s an awesome idea!

The portion is an awesome idea I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I’m going to stop the yogurt treats then I thought they were ok at the most once a day but I’ll stop. And I finally tried the corn starch routine today it really did nothing but make a mess I did notice when I was cleaning her butt that it seems like loose fur that it matted with dried poop. Very disgusting and very worrisome for me obviously. I almost had to run the corn starch around and almost tug the matted fur with the poop out. I felt very uneasy doing this and I did it very slowly and didn’t even finish because age deserved a break until tommrow. I gave her fresh romaine after so I hope she forgave me but as far as the tugging goes which very uncomfortable about I’m not hurting her if she’s relaxed and licking me as doing it correct? I would assume from common sense If I was hurting her she would be very uneasy about it but I’m not totally sure. So my next question is tugging the rest out a good idea or should I consider a different option? Cutting the fur is something I’m not comfortable with as I’m scared of hurting her on mistake. Not that I’m an idiot but one wrong unpredictable hop from her and it would be a disaster

She is probably shedding. Most of the buns are right now. Buns shed their fur usually twice a year and they shed a lot! It will look like little tufts of hair poking out and it will glide out with little effort, unless of course their is poop keeping it matted in. Try some luke warm water on a wash cloth to loosen the poop. I agree though with the others, the poop that is getting stuck to her could be a little more serious that just her getting dirty.
