Mimzy is developing a curious patch of fur along his spine over his lower back. It’s about the size of a silver dollar and seems to be all overcoat (coarse, long strands of fur) and very little if any velvet returning after I had brushed the area last week with the Hairbuster. You can see where the skin is under the wisps of guard hairs. It looked fine when I finished, but it’s like a bunch has fallen out since then and won’t grow back in.

He definitely has a lot of old undercoat built up all over him, and especially around the rear legs and right behind the forelegs, that comes off in chunks each time I brush him, (and he’s probably swallowing some of this too) but I don’t want to take off so much that the new growth can’t keep up. This appears to be the only spot on his whole pelt though, since I brushed last, that seems to be having trouble growing back in. I see places he could be barbering himself around his rear legs, although not to the point of skin, and of course I’m no longer brushing that patch on his back until it starts to fluff back out.

Any thoughts? What should I do? Should I continue to take off the old undercoat anywhere I can still see it or should I wait until his next full body shed? Sorry I can’t upload a pic, PC is still having trouble and since Fiver’s ER vet visit last friday, I can’t afford to take it in.

I think that it is possible to overgroom but not to a point that it won’t grow back. Rabbit hair seems to grow in spurts. And depending on how your bunny is molting it is not uncommon to have bare spots with clumpy heavy molting. As far as it not growing back yet. How long has it been?

When my first bunny was neutered, and when Jack had surgery, the area that was shaved didn’t grow back gradually or evenly. Depending on the where they were in their fur growth, it could take a really long time and then wham it comes in, or with Jack, it grew in patches AND spurts.

It sounds like you’ve gotten alot of fur off and so I would say you could wait OR just do a once or twice over every so often, but don’t worry about getting as much as you can off in one hairbuster session.

            Thanks, BB.
Yeah, you can see fur trying to come back at the top of the bare patch, but the skin is almost showing towards the bottom. It hasn’t been too long, about a week or so. I do remember shaving/cutting a lot of fur off Mimzy during one bad round of Pen-G shots and that didn’t return till his next big shed. I was afraid he was going to be bald the rest of his life! 0_o

I mostly worry about him ingesting this stuff. His gut is slow enough as it is, we don’t need more trouble in that area. So as long as it doesn’t appear to hurt him, or that the skin isn’t injured in any way, I guess we’ll just take the rest off as it comes. ^_^

It sure is a wonderful product. I didn’t even get this much hair off the buns with the furminator! They must be so much more comfortable without all that floofeh sticking to them.
