Question. It’s been awhile since i was here.

Rachel has a really bad case of urine scald. I mean really bad as in i earned a look of disapproval from Dr. Jeanne herself. Ever since Brighton passed away Rachel has been a finky eater. I mean finiky. I also noticed she has been peeing dark colors. So when i took Leah in for a check up on the 10th i told Dr. Jeanne this. She thought she might have another UTI (rach has a history of them) and gave her some Baytril. On monday she still didn’t seem to want to eat so she prescribed her some pain meds. While on the pain meds Rachel really perked up. She ate better than she had since even before Brighton Passed. Then as soon as she went off she went back to normal. So i switched Beka (again. She’s been getting her check up switched up since April since a another bunny always seem to fall sick at the same time) with Rachel on monday and that’s why it was learned Rachel has a really bad case.

At the vet Rachel had to spend a considerable time on her back. She wasn’t coroperating any other way. Kept her month sealed shut and was not going to sit still. Ever since then Rachel has literally been “tight lipped”. She spits out her pineapple juice and pain meds. I’m not even sure if she is chewing or what the critical care/baby food i’ve been feading her. She doesn’t seem to move her mouth.  She’s never done this before.
She also tries to get away from me in any way she can ever. Literally. In any way, shape, or form. She’s been doing this since her first dose of the “Baytril otic”; the cream she has for the scald.

Is she being prissy or should i be really concerened? It’s so troublesome to get her to the vet. I work full time M-F and Dr. Jeanne isn’t there every day (she’s a vet a the animal shelter too).  I don’t trust Dr. Brady there at the office she misdiagnosed Leah. I could always try Dr. Don (he spayed the girls), but still…..

I don’t know what to do or think…. Rachel doesn’t have another appointment till July 1st.

Can you do a drop off to the vet? I don’t really know what could be wrong with her but it’s worth having the vet do a full physical and maybe check her teeth as well.

I agree with Sarita – if the vet can take another look at her, it’s possible that the closed mouth may be more than just being mad. She may have some kind of tooth or even mouth problem and the vet needs to find out. I wonder if the pain med was also stopping a pain in her mouth area too, so she ate for a while because of the relief.
Poor baby. Getting a correct diagnosis and treatment is a long way to getting her well again.

I feel like a horrible bunny mommy. Rachel Bunny has fly strike or had more accurately. She’s on the way to recovery now. I went to give Rachel her scald medicine and found her butt covered in blood. So i immediately wrapped her in a towel and called the vet. Dr. Don took one look at her and said she had gotten maggots/ fly strike in the urine scald. I nearly fainted there and then. I actually started to cry. She was fine yesterday. Well not all the way fine, but you get my point. She had gotten them because no-one listened to me about keeping the garage door shut ( my parents won’t let me keep them in my room, nor the basement) and flies got in.

He went to work immediately. Assuring me a house cat came in yesterday with the exact same thing and in the same condition and it was fine. I had to leave her since she has to stay overnight. They told me to call at 3pm. I was late for work and my boss, who was already in a bad mood, was her ever charming self to me *sarcasm*. She did let me call at 3pm to see how Rachel was though. Dr. Don told me then that she’ll make a full recovery. She was more perky and have been getting liquids. Dr. Jeanne even stopped in and got to see her. I get to pick her up tomorrow after work. She’s going to be on a new antibiotic and pain meds. I just cringe at the cost. I’m looking at $420-$600, but my baby is worth any price….. Needless to say this isn’t going to happen again. I went out and got 8 things of fly paper and strung them around. But still my poor baby. I feel so bad

Please don’t beat yourself up. You’re a good bunny mom for seeing to it that she got the right attention and treatment as soon as you could. She’ll be fine now, and I think if you let your family know how much it’s going to cost you, the should be a little more cooperative in helping to keep the basement secure for her. Just get some rest tonight.

Thanks. I have Miss. Rachel all set up in my room. She’s looking out the corner of her eye at me and lounging in her veggies. She is still not eating though. I feel sorry for Essy she seems to think Rachel has gone and left her forever. I’m letting Rachel chill by herself tomorrow, but i’m going to bring Essy up so they can cuddle on sat.

I agree not to beat yourself up. Look what you’ve done to make sure she recovered. Even house bunnies can get fly strike if flies get in. Just takes an open door, an open screenless window etc. You saved your bunny and maybe now your family will listen to you.

Are you able to keep your bunnies permanently in your room now?

I’m not allowed to. My sister claims she can’t “breath” around them. Even if they’re in my room. I had them in the basement before and she claimed the smell was coming up the air vent. So they’re left in their pens in the garage for now. They have a air conditioner and heater there in the appropriate weather. I have to fight tooth and nail for them to keep them in their pens. Especially lately. My sister’s boyfriend just moved in and i think he wants the garage to park his car. Something that is not going to happen. So till i can afford a place of my own the buns have to stay where they are. They’re only allowed in my room when their sick and recovering.

Miss. Rachel doesn’t look like she ate much last night…. I’m hoping she starts to eat on her own soon. She is still doing the “no no not opening mouth” thing when i give her her meds and critical care.
