I’ve had Bailey for almost 7 years and have never had this happen.  He has lost thumbnails before, they seem to grow back slowly. In fact last time I clipped, I noticed that one of those thumbnails appeared to be growing backwards, when I went back to check it, it just came out – no blood.  This time I did him up real good.  Pulled whole nail out of bed and he bled and bled. Just feel so awful about it.  Will this nail grow back like the thumbnails since it seems to have only left what I call a “post”.  Thanks for your input!

I am having to adopt Bailey out to another loving home because I have had severe respiratory health issues, and  my parents are bunny sitting him full time and now that we have him a new home he will be going there within a week or so.  I want to be able to tell his adoptive mom what’s going on.

It is hard to say if the nail will grow back or not- depends on why the nail came out to begin with. Fungal infections or immune issues can cause problems with the nail bed- so if that is an issue it may not grow back or it may not grow back normally. I would recommend having a vet look at Bailey. Pets can get their nails caught and broken- but it is not “normal” for a rabbit to lose any nails right down to the nail bed- that should take trauma to rip the nails off to cause that in a healthy nail/nail bed.

Rucy’s nail was once ripped out (ouch) and it left a nub. I also think it was the same nail you are describing. I cannot remember what or how it happened, but I do remember that in her case hers did grow back, but it took a very long time and it never fully was the same as the other nails. It just sort of grew a thick short nail type of covering.

My own bunny Bailey, when she was alive, had a couple of nails that grew backwards as well. Could have been due to the way she walked (she had hind leg weakness), but I had to make sure to keep those nails trimmed to make sure they didn’t get snagged on things.

When was the last time your bunny had a vet check-up. Might be a good thing to do anyway for the adoptive mom.
