Hey guys. Whilst grooming my little Koori, I found a large open wound across her bottom. It was infected and didn’t look great. At first the vet nurse said it was flystrike but no maggots. Also unusual in an indoor bunny in England?? So they are cleaning and cutting back the wound this evening and sutering tomorrow. They have kept her and are giving her critical care as she was a little off her food today. I’m not sure how serious this is. The wound looked bad to me so I rushed her to the vets. Has anyone got any similar stories? They didn’t tell me anything else about how serious her injury was so I’m a little worried, it must be quite serious to keep her over night right? I mean they didn’t even keep her overnight when she had her spay? Any replies to help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Oh goodness! Healthy vibes to your little bun.

Is it possibly caused by sitting in her pee? Urine can scald skin. It can be caused by a number of things that cause bunnies to sit in their pee, but UTIs are a common cause.

I hope the vets are able to get her back on track.

It’s a good point Elrohwen thanks, I’ll mention it to the nurse tomorrow. I have recently pulled up the carpet and put laminate down. Koori has been marking round the other buns cage at night. I’ve been clearing it up and encouraging her to use the litter box but not worrying about it. I guess it’s a problem as the laminate doesn’t soak up the wee! Oh dear I wonder if it’s that! I’m worried a I’m not sure if it is life threatening or not. She was slightly off her food and slept a little more than usual but I thought it was just coz shes going through her first big moult! Can bunnies recover well from infected wounds? The vet said it was a few days old, hence it being infected. Koori’s hair is so long, it’s hard to see, I only noticed coz she smelt a bit pooey and I was checking her bottom.

I hope your Koori is better soon. Fingers crossed it’s something easily treatable.

You’ve honestly done the best thing for her in getting to the vet as soon as you found it. (((Vibes))) for your Koori !
Has she been managing to get around normally on the laminate flooring?
Indoor rabbits can get flystrike – it’s only takes one fly.

Good job getting her in when you did. As long as the infection wasn’t very severe, she’ll probably be fine. From what I’ve seen, with the right antibiotics and care, bunnies recover from infections and wounds fairly well.

Definitely ask the vet about urine scald when you get a chance. From what I’ve heard, flies don’t usually lay their eggs on healthy, clean bunnies.

Sending good vibes to you and Koori.

You did the best you can getting her to a vet!! {{Koori}} I doubt if it was sitting in urine as just weeing on laminate would not have urine scalding her. It’s more if rabbits are kept on not absorbant/dirty bedding with no where to get off it. More like an outdoor hutch rabbit would get. Even getting a bum a bit dirty from wee from laminate would not cause that so I wouldn’t think whatever it is, not your fault.
If she’s close enough to mark at another buns cage, I wonder if she got her bum nipped?

Thanks for all the well wishes for Koori, still can’t phone for another few hours!! I guess its possible that she got bitten, not something that happened before! The laminate floor was a must as I couldn’t stop the buns from eating the carpet, they were never left unattended but the mintute my back was turned they were at it! The laminate is fine, they slip a little but i have some low pile rugs around to help. They don’t seem to mind it really.
