I rescued Tilly from a pet store a few weeks ago. She was in a 10 gallon tank in the back of the store by the feeder rodents. The lady said they treated her for her head tilt and that she would have a permanent tilt. Tilly couldn’t eat or drink on her own and she can only roll and flip. I told them I would take her and they gave her to me. She is now about 20 weeks old and has seen the vet. She had a bad ear infection and is on Baytril and Metacam. She is able to eat and drink on her own but still only rolls. Will she ever be able to walk and hop again?

I’m so sorry.  What a a wonderful heart you have to take on a bunny who is dealing with this.  That bunny is very lucky to have you!

Some bunnies do make a good recovery, while others do struggle a bit, while others get used it.  There are varied reactions.  There is a great website that specifically deals with head-tilt (regardless if it is due to an ear infection, e.cunculi, etc).  They have great tips on how to help a bunny with head-tilt.  http://www.OnTheWonk.com (also has tips on making your bunny more comfortable)

This is a really good article about dealing with severe ear infection that causes head-tilt http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-8/head-tilt.html

Was the pet store still treating her, or did they give her treatment, and then stop?   I know from reading about severe ear infection, the treatment needs to be long-term for a better chance.

Another good article to read which also offers some hope even if it takes months to get better:  http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/tilt.html

Thank you so much for giving Tilly a better life.  A 10 gallon take in the back of the store was very sad place.  Must have been scary.

Now she has someone to offer her love during this difficult time.

Hugs to you and I’m sending out healing vibes to Tilly!

          Keep us updated.

NOTE: I did have a bunny who had an ear infection, but it wasn’t severe and her rolling only lasted for a few days, but I know that others have dealt with more serious ear infections and so hopefully they will be along to help as well.

I have nothing further to add, just that I hope she does well with treatment. Thank you so much for saving her. Regardless of the track her treatment takes, if nothing else she is experiencing love and caring during a difficult time.

I have nothing further either – BB gave some great recommends. She is extremely lucky to have you and I will send vibes for a full recovery.

You might want to get a second opinion from another vet that might have more rabbit experience as well.
