Help! My bunny is under medication (serynge fed antibiotics) for a possible infection (see my other topic)

He hates being picked up, but I have no choice when it’s time to take his meds. Today when I picked him up he had time to kick once, and I’m not too sure what he got caught on, but when I put him on me I felt some oozing. He was bleeding like crazy! (Plus he’s white, it was pretty scary)

he broke 2 nails, and seeing how long the broken pieces are they don’t seem to have broken right at the base, but still pretty far.  I had the reflexes of applying light pressure with a paper towel to stop the bleeding, and let him down after having take his meds. The bleeding seems like it stoped. He went to his ”safe spot” near the sofa, and he licked his feet for a while. He’s lying down looking a bit stressed and licking his feet from time to time…

Now it’s pretty late, and the vet is closed tomorrow. Aside from keeping his environment clean and keeping an eye on him (I read the bunny first aide), is there anything else I should do?? Am I panicking for nothing?

I feel terrible… I wish all that blood was mine..

This actually happened to one of my bunnies — I can’t remember which one now as it was awhile ago, but I was wearing a sweatshirt with a zipper down the front, and my bunny’s nail got caught in the teeth of the zipper. I think what you did was good– You stopped the bleeding, but I think you need to double check that it doesn’t have a rough edge or hanging off — otherwise it will catch on things. I’m sure it hurts as anytime a nail bleeds it means it has gotten to the quick(the nerve). If you see it start to bleed again, you can use a bit of plain flour to help stop the bleeding too if pressure doesn’t stop it.

EDITED:  (realized your bunny is on antibiotics)—Since he’s already on antibiotics that should help with preventing infection.

Just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn’t get infected. If it continues to bother your bunny on Monday, then call your vet.

To prevent him from kicking in the future, you might want to try the bunny burrito method.  http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Transport/Towel/Towel.htm

I’ll check it in a few then. I should let him calm down a tad bit…

Is whole wheat flour ok (the brown one)? That’s all I have at the moment

I guess the fact that he had just taken his antibiotics when he started licking himself wasn’t such a bad thing heh…

EDIT: thanks for that link! I’ll be sure to use that next time! =D

I honestly don’t know about whole wheat flour as a substitute and I should since that and gram flour is the only kind I have. I just have styptic powder for broken nails so I never had to worry about it.  Do you have corn starch? That should work too.  If you don’t, then just do the “pressure only” method.  I’m sure that will be just fine.

Don’t worry.  Broken nails or nails that are accidentally clipped too close are not uncommon.  I’m sure he’ll be fine.

He’s already scratching his ears like he would normally. Thanks for reassuring me

He wouldn’t let me touch his feet at all yesterday nor today. I tried taking a look without touching while he was liying down with his feet back. All I can see through the fur is his other nails that are still long, but it doesn’t seem to bother him all that much. He jumps and runs normally and he stopped licking them completely. I’ll have to take him for a nail cut soon, so I’ll tell the vet to watch for that when I go.

Most bunnies are not fans of letting you touch their feet regardless, so it might be just the way he is normally about his feet? It’s good though that they don’t seem to be bothering him, and again, it’s good that he’s already on antibiotics anyway just in case.
