My 6 month old bunny Pigpen has been doing pretty well with his litterbox since I’ve brought him home at the end of May, but he still drops the occasional poop around my room and around his cage.  I’m not too concerned about this, as that’s to be expected, but he does occasionally pee in the house and in his cage, outside the litterbox.  How do I alleviate this problem?

Sounds like he is ready to get neutered Often that can help with litter training.

Do you use any bedding/litter in the cage? If so, I would remove it as it can confuse little buns in learning how to use the litter box.

Good advice from MB! Sounds like neutering time.

Can you describe his cage set up and what kind of bedding you have (if any) and the litter box? There might be ways to improve his set up to encourage him to use the litter box more.

Yeah, its definitely time I’m trying to find a rabbit-saavy vet in the North Jersey/Bergen county area, so if anyone has any suggestions, they’d definitely be welcome!

And his cage is lined with aspen and I use Carefresh in his litterbox; I know that this can be confusing to him, but i tried lining with some grass mats and he still continued to pee in the cage, which just resulted in him lounging in his puddles and getting himself all wet so I went back to aspen for better absorbency.

You really don’t want anything absorbent in the bottom of the cage. During litter training you just have to wipe up accidents as soon as you see them. Bedding, towels, blankets, mats, etc encourage rabbits to pee. After he’s neutered, you might be able to introduce grass mats or blankets, but not right now.

Thanks so much for the advice! I just hope my carpet doesn’t tempt him too much, I’m running out of club soda!

Yep, Beka’s right – the aspen on the floor is definitely teaching him he can go wherever he wants.

I don’t know of vets in NJ (though I’m sure there are some great ones in the area), but I’ve heard that Gil Stanzione in White Plains is fantastic and reasonably priced. Lots of people in CT drive over to his office even though we have a great rabbit vet practice here. He also does a lot of work for NYC rabbit rescue orgs.

Last I heard, New Jersey does have a low-cost spay/neuter program for rabbits. Maybe try a google search with those terms to see what comes up. I don’t remember off-hand who it’s thru.
