        Hi,

I’m looking for a vet for my new bunny. I was thinking about going with Banfield inside of Petsmart. Is anyone familiar with them?

        Thanks

Personally, I don’t like them. I also just looked on their website and they don’t mention hay at all as even part of a rabbit diet. They said that pellets should be the main component. Yuck!
Rabbit.org is a good place to start for vets that know rabbits. You need an exotic vet. A regular cat and dog one won’t do and they will give you flase information.

I think those petstore vets can be good for basic things like dog vaccinations and certain treatments, but I feel that all animals (dogs/cats/rabbits, etc…) need a real vet for their care. Especially with a rabbit, they need specialized care, so an exotics vet is your best bet.

Have you searched the House Rabbit Society’s listings for rabbit vets yet?

You can also try calling vets in your area? Check out this site, they give you a good guideline for how to go about searching for a good vet.

To find mine, I called around and asked if the clinic had a rabbit specialist or exotics pets specialist. I was referred to the vet college nearby, they had an exotic & zoological animal specialist that I have been very happy with.

Thanks you. I did follow up on those leads. There aren’t many options where I live. The best I could find was a place called Mckenzie Animal Hospital. They only average 1 or 2 rabbits a week. They seem to know there stuff, though.

Since my vet is a teaching hospital, they rotate through students each semester. When I take Huckleberry to the vet, it is usually the first time that the students have handled a rabbit. They are always accompanied by a well-practiced exotics specialist though. I sometimes worry that the students dont know what they are doing, but I know they have a good guide whom I trust. I dont think my vet gets many rabbits around here but I am glad that the students get the chance to be aware of them.
Im glad you found a vet. Its a tough search, but well worth it. Is the vet a small animal or exotics specialist?

At my clinic we only see a few rabbits a month, but one of our vets has owned rabbits her whole life so Tait see’s her. Out of the 10 vets I work with 8 will see rabbits, we just don’t get enough in. If you don’t have the option of finding a rabbit specialist, then it isn’t the end of the world. If you can find a vet that you trust and is willing to do the research, then that is also good.

The Bunspace website has a listing of vets and reviews posted by members who have rabbits. You might look there also.

I don’t think 1-2 rabbits a week sound bad at all. You have to keep in mind that people don’t seek vet care for rabbits as frequently, so assuming all of those buns only see the vet once a year… that is saying the vet has between 50 and 100 different rabbits he sees yearly.

Ok, I feel better now. Thanks
