My female has taken to chewing the bars of the x-pen after I let them have “free” reign of my apartment. The pen isn’t closed but just squares off “their” area; previously they had to same area but the pen was closed off. Their area meaning that everything in that square is theirs – toys, diggy box, ramp, blanket, etc. She has more than enough things to chew on, which she does chew, and she knows the pen is open (she sometimes chews after running around my apt or prior) so I’m very confused why she is chewing on the bars. She never chewed the bars before and even though they get locked in their condo during the days/when I’m at work, she’s never chewed on the condo bars either. Any insights?

A rabbit does not like to be ‘told’ where they aren’t allowed to go. that’s all. I could pen off a three foot area of empty space in my living room and it would be the ONLY place my rabbit would want to go.

Sometimes they do it to get your attention to let them out, but I’ve noticed the chewing when the door is wide open and there’s no clear reason either.
I do know that it’s a favorite thing all our bunnies do, so your not alone.

If it’s for attention – and it can be very annoying – ignore it. The best way for a bunny to get turned off to a naughty or obnoxious activity is being completely ignored, then distracted by something better. So, you ignore, let your bunny find some of those lovely toys by herself, and she may stop or not do it as often.
My guess is that it somehow feels good on their teeth or they wouldn’t all do it so voraciously.

When i did use pens, I’dl weave cardboard, willow, grass mats, parts of a phone books. It does get noisy as they chew and scratch at it, but it helps wear them out….or it at least did with mine. Though sometimes, they’ll still just chew on the it (and it does get annoying) but they eventually give up.

Oh Miaeih, I was just going to post the same question! My Pepper chews like crazy on her NIC cage! I think that is part of the reason she has tummy issues. I find lots of little plastic pieces on the carpet and also inside the cage, so I’m sure she’s eating some of it too. I’ve lined the bottom of the cage bars with urine guards, but not she biting other parts of the cage…so frustrating! BB – that is a great idea! I will try to weave cardboard through the bars….
