I took Bobby to the vet last week for his teeth trim – it’s been about 6 months.  Bobby was dumped at a guinea pig rescue (literally dumped outside in his cage and the people drove off) and it was due to his teeth – not sure they knew that, but he was not able to eat and was a little bag of bones.

So after a few months of treatments for dental abscesses and teeth being pulled and tooth trims and pen-g shots, he recovered and started gaining weight.  So I knew when I got him that he would need regular dental check-ups – started doing ever 4 months and that seemed the right amount of time but I decided to wait 6 months this time and the vet said, they were pretty bad.

Well, here’s the thing, he doesn’t really show any outward signs of dental problems that I can really see.  I see it now that I have had his teeth trimmed though – he’s definetly eating more greens and seems to relish his treats more.  And while he seemed a bit grumpier before the trim, I really just thought he was being grumpy but apparently he was being grumpy because his teeth were uncomfortable (they grow wonky and grow into his cheek and his tounge – just basically all over the place).

And he’s a very small rabbit (1.5 pounds) so he’s not a big voracious eater like my big rabbits.

But there is no drooling, no teary eyes, no picking food up and dropping it.  When I had Pepe, it was much more obvious because he would do weird things with his mouth and he would stop eating.

So, I guess it’s true that sometimes, there are no obvious signs of dental problems.  And I am definitely going to take him in more often for at least a dental exam.

Poor little buy, I remember seeing his photos, he looked about as big as a mouse. Which teeth did you have removed? Having had bad teeth all my life I feel for him and my Toby too. He couldn’t have a better bunny mom than you!

She removed some of the lower left side molars. I’m there with you and Toby and the bad teeth – I really hate the dentist!

              Poor Bobby!

Hannah didn’t show any signs either, but after I got her trimmer I noticed her eating a lot more and a lot faster than before – I just didn’t know what normal was for her, so I didn’t think anything of it since she always finished her food eventually.

How often does your vet recommend coming back for checkups?

Elrohwen, I think it just really depends on the rabbit but if I had a rabbit who had dental issues I would at least say a minimum of 6 months and then go from there – obviously sooner if you notice any significant changes.

I know I’ll take Bobby sooner now, maybe 5 months. With Pepe it was monthly.

luckily Toby’s are just his front teeth and they can trim them easily, I just make sure the two best rabbit techs are going to be there that day. Matter of fact he goes in tomorrow. They love to cuddle him and I can always smell different perfumes on him when I take him home.

Hmmm….wonder how Pringles feels about that :~)

hahaha, I know Daisy doesn’t like it. As soon as he can corner Toby, he (and sometimes Pringles joins in) grooms him from head to toe till the poor little guys head is wet.

Last night I had Charlie, Toby and Pringles all together in the living room with me sitting in the middle with a heavy duty squirt bottle. No fights or even humping. P and T would run a bit when Chariie wanted to sniff them over but I was really surprised. Wasn’t 10 minutes before they all went to different corners and flopped. I couldn’t catch Daisy, he’s like greased lightening when he knows you’re after him.

Since Mimzy’s eating habits are always a bit wonky, I’m starting to rely also on his water intake. This last time before he had his teeth filed he was drinking more than eating and the vet figured it was because his tummy was emptier due to not being able to chew enough hay and this was the only way he could fill it. So now every time I see him drinking more water and there’s no other cause (like heat) I tend to err on the side of caution and at least have him seen.
Hope little Bobby is feeling better. One never likes to think any bunny is ailing, but it’s seeing the wee ones unwell that really breaks my heart. ((((((((((((((((((Bobby)))))))))))))))))))

Poor little guy. I’m with you, I HATE the dentist! I have to get my wisdoms out soon.

I have to bring Bindi in next week for a re-check. I’m hoping it will be quite a while before they need to be re-done.That was a lot of stress for Momma and Bindi. He hasn’t shown any signs that he’s having further problems but it hasn’t been very long since his trim. I need to bring Stormy in soon for a check-up too. He isn’t showing any signs of problems but he’s 7 so I want to get him checked just in case.

Bobby seems to be feeling much better.

MM, he doesn’t drink much water anyway, none of my rabbits do. I think just knowing that he is going to have dental problems is the only way I am going to really be able to tell. Alot of times they will drink water to help soothe their mouth though but he didn’t seem to do that.

I just don’t think he is going to be one to show anything but very subtle signs and it will just be best to do a routine dental check-up.

I’m glad Bobby is feeling better, Sarita. Toby seems to drink a bit more water than the others too, but I do cut all the veggies in long thin strips and grate the carrots and he’s always chowing down on them. And the cat food……the stinking tuna catfood ;-(
