Okay. . .I’m getting closer at making a decision to spay my little bunnies (Although I am terrified of sending human or pet into surgrey.  Which is what I mainly need to work past.) But my mom had a good question. Spaying doesn’t change a bunny’s personality, does it? As you can tell, we don’t know much about spaying rabbits.

          It doesn’t

Some rabbits become more chill. spaying your bunnies is the best thing you could do for them. It gets rid of the chance of reproductive cancers, false pregnancies, and crazy hormonal behavior (ex: bad litter habits, etc).

My 1 1/2 year old become more sweeter, if not, more brattier than ever… ha ha ha.

The one thing you need to think about, is the fact that female buns have an 80% chance of getting uterine cancer. Spaying eliminates that risk. Cancer treatment is painful and much scarier than a spay, and TONS more expensive, thats for sure.

Do it for their health, not for personality

Most bunnies naturally mellow and mature as they get older. It doesn’t have much to do with the spay, it would happen either way. In general, a bun who loves pets will love them after the spay, a bun that doesn’t will not.

It’s actually the new hormones that change a bunny’s personality, and a spay returns them to their basic nature. But Beka’s right about aging also being a personality factor: they just mellow out with maturity. Kind of like the way kittens are spazy ninja fuzzballs when they’re little, but you don’t really see adult cats behaving that way after they grow up. Bunnies usually hang on to the best part of their basic nature post-surgery. It’s a good thing.

Thanks everyone.  As you can tell, we’re newbies to bunnies getting fixed. I am going to try to get the spay appointment set for June 16th, at a vet place I found on a list on rabbit.org. (The first place wanted $650 to spay. the next one wanted $120 and has just as good a reputation. ) Ahhhh. . .  I’m going into panic mode. I had to get my first rabbit, Sally, put down quite a few years ago and I just handed the box with Sally in it over to the person. But ever since then when I hand a pet over to a nurse or vet for some reason I get that “I’m never to see them again feeling” from I felt when I handed Sally over. June 16th is going to be a very stressful day for me.

Ask the vet to call you when the surgery is done, that will keep you from worrying about her longer than needed. My vet called us right after it was over and they were sure everything was OK! The fatality rate in rabbits is low if the vet knows what they are doing. My vet also does an exam beforehand so he knows any major health issues that might be there to complicate things.

Just remember you are doing this for her well being and she’ll be much healthier and happier after it is done (after a few days healing up). My girl was just done on Friday and she’s already digging the carpet and bouncing around.

The difference in price might be if one uses a laser and one uses a scalpel, as laser surgery is more pricey (but heals faster and is a bit less invasive).

Both my girls made it through just fine. They are a bit groggy and cranky the first couple of days, but if you have an experienced vet, they should come through nicely

EssMarg: I know exactly how you feel! My babies got spayed/neutered on the 27th of May and I was soooo nervous! I probably posted a million questions on here! But they are fine. The hardest part was keeping them confined. For girls, you do have to keep them confined longer. It took Pepper about 4 days to look and act normal again. My boy was fine pretty much right after although he was more sleepy than usual.
                        Good luck with everything!
