I’m a nervous wreck. My bunny Hatter was diagnosed with the beginning stages of GI Stasis and has been on Critical Care, Baytril, Reglan & Lactulose since Tuesday. He is eating his leafy greens, pellets and happily eats the Critical Care I mix up for him but is still not eating any hay still. He also seems to be eating his mate Alice’s cecal pellets, which I think is good? His vet said he has molar spurs and he is getting them filed down on Monday. I’m getting more worried as his poop is getting even smaller than it was before. They now look like tiny hard dark brown poop. How long will it take for him to recover and have normal poop again? Should I take him back in since his poop is getting even smaller?

Well, getting the molar spurs is going to help ALOT, that is probably the reason he is not eating and hopefully once he gets those molars filed he will be able to fully recover.

I just called my vet to see if she could see Hatter any sooner to have his molars trimmed but she can’t. I wish I hadn’t called and she even had to push the procedure back to Thursday due to an emergency. I called the bunny rescue where I adopted him and they said I am doing everything right by assist feeding him, giving him the medications and making sure he has enough water but I’m still worried. Thursday seems like a long time to have to wait for this.

I agree with you – is there perhaps another vet the rescue can recommend to get him in sooner?

                 Poor Hatter!

Sometimes, you have to get creative when offering your rabbit food it doesn’t want to eat. Someone on the forum- I think it was LittlePuffyTail, but can’t remember- had this idea: Get a leaf or two of romaine lettuce, and put some cucumber, peppers, shredded carrots, parsey, pellets, and a few strands on hay in it. Wrap it up with a piece of hay and feed.
It doesn’t sound like there’s much you can do other than trying to keep his gut moving. A few pieces of hay is better than none and sometimes if it’s presented differently, they will gladly eat it. Plus, he’ll have fun ripping through the bunny wrap.
Here’s some pictures of the ones I did, although I used baby spinach instead of romaine and it was infinetely harder.

Yummy — take out the hay and pellets, and I’ll snack on that!

Tate, thank you so much for the suggestion. That sounds like a great idea and fun for the both of us. I have almost all of those ingredients right now too.

I called his vet back and spoke with the vet tech who had actually seen Hatter and I last week and she was able to get the other rabbit vet, Dr Ridgeway, to take Hatter on Monday morning at 7:30am. I wish they could have taken him tomorrow but at least I don’t have to wait till Thursday. My heart is not hammering in my chest quite as hard now.

Just wanted to update you guys. Hatter loved the veggies but ate around the hay. lol! I gave him a gentle tummy massage and he did produce more poop after. Last night I did see him nom on at least one piece of hay so he has gotten even a tiny bit. He goes in tomorrow for his molar trimming. I hope he will be back to his curious, binky self very soon.

What a turd! At the very least, he got some amount of fiber from the veggies, so that’s good!
He will feel so much better after getting his teeth taken care of. Good luck!

I just went through this with my bun so I totally understand how on edge you must feel. I’m glad to hear that you got an appointment tomorrow. After Oreo got her teeth filed, our vet did keep her on the medicine for stasis for a full week as a precaution, but she seemed back to herself after a few days.

As for the hay thing, when Oreo was in the worst of her stasis and refusing to eat hay, the vet techs told me I could take a piece of hay and stick it under her nose/next to her mouth and kind of wiggle it around against her face. Eventually she’d get so frustrated with it being there that she’d bite it and would often end up eating at least a little bit of it. Maybe you can try this tactic?

Sending lots of vibes for tomorrow’s appointment and a quick recovery!!!

Wishing Hatter lots of luck for his dental procedure and a speedy recovery.

I just had my lops teeth filed a couple of weeks ago. Be prepared for him to be sore and unwilling to eat on his own for a couple of days. Bindi would only eat baby Romaine leaves (they are nice and soft) for several days and it took about a week for him to start enjoying hay again. Buy the softest hay you can find (Oxbow Orchard Grass is good). You can mix Critical Care with a bit of carrot or banana baby food as well.

Thank you guys so much for the tips and advice. I really appreciate it. I have the Critical Care but I will also pick up some Orchard Grass too. Right now they have Timothy Hay. I’ve tried the under the nose trick and he wont fall for it. He just hops off or he grabs it and tosses it to the side. He’s a very opinionated and stubborn little bun. I did get him to eat a little bit of hay last night by mixing it into his salad.

Hatter and I are getting ready to go to the vet now. I will update you on how he is doing.

Hatter is back from the vet and doing well. He even did a little binky before Alice decided she needed to chin the smell of the vet’s office off of him. That was one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. <3

I am going to work on more creative ways of getting him to eat some hay other than just offering it as I have been.

Glad to hear he made out okay!

Love the buns’ names by the way. I’m a big Alice in Wonderland fan.
