Hello again. I haven’t been on in a couple years but I have a question. I’ve had buns for over 20 years and always given them a varied diet with lettuces and veggies. Someone on one of the guinea pig forums said it was bad to give them lettuce. Huh?

They get spring mix, romaine, red and green leaf, escorole, bell peppers, dandelion green, chards, dill, cilantro, parsley and so on. I mix it up so that they get a variety every day. The daily ones are lettuce, spring mix, peppers and cilantro. And one or two other things. Is this good?

I’ve been feeding this for years to all my buns.

Lettuce is fine, except iceberg lettuce.

Lettuce is amazing, and as Monkey stated, no iceberg. I don’t know where that ‘no lettuce’ for guinea pigs or rabbits came from.

That’s what I thought. I thought she meant iceberg too and said the same thing . Any lettuce but iceberg. She said there were studies about lettuce being bad for them.

I firgured after having them for so long and only occasionally having poopy problems I was doing the right thing. I feed both pigs and buns the same thing.

              Thank you.

Poopy butt can be caused by diet, but it is best for that to get checked out

There is a higher risk of poopy butt in feeding too many pellets.

Thanks everyone. I knew I was right in how I fed them but she said her vet researched it and so on. Having years and years of long lived rabbits ishouldn’t have second guessed myself. But, it’s always good to have someone to ask when you do.

It’s definitely only iceberg. That’s probably the most common lettuce people have in their fridge, so it probably started with someone getting an owner to be safe by cautioning them too generally, and it spread – like the telephone game – on the internet to include the other lettuces.
