So, I’m getting kind of tired of buying greens Zeus won’t eat and throwing away wilted greens that sat in his cage ignored. .

        He won’t eat..

        – Parsley, curly or flat.

        – Mint

        – Baby spinach (he’ll eat regular spinach)

        – Turnip greens

        – Mustard greens

        – Carrot tops

        – Some brands of romaine (yes, he has a brand preference)

        – Some brands of red leaf/green leaf lettuce

        He WILL eat..

        – Romaine that’s from Shnuck’s or Jewel only

        – Kale

        – Cilantro

He will tolerate, but only eats like 75% of what I put down for him..

        – Celery

        – Collard greens (certain brands only)

How do you keep variety in the diet when the bun dislikes the majority of greens I have available?  If it were up to him, he’d eat nothing but kale, carrots, and pineapple.

You just feed them what they will eat – you cannot force them to eat anything. Seems like you’ve done your due diligence and tried quite a few choices. Have you tried basil? Maybe since he likes cilantro he might like basil. What about dill?

He is picky – how does he know where the Romaine is from LOL.

I haven’t tried basil or dill, as they’re rather expensive.  I should check the farmer’s market though, see if they have it any cheaper.  Cilantro is cheap at $0.60 per “bunch”.

And I have no clue how he figures out where the Romaine’s from.  He will NOT eat Walmart Romaine.  At first I thought it was just a fluke, maybe I got a bad bag or something, but no, he specifically won’t eat Romaine if it’s from Walmart.

Try buying a basil plant maybe. I bought one from trader joe’s and it’s lasting me quite a while (3 weeks so far). You can also get them from safeway as well for pretty cheap and there are other potted herbs as well. Lago is pretty picky on what she’ll eat as well. She only really likes romaine, basil, and dandelion greens. Panko will eat anything leftover though.

Try some chicory, Momo loves it. So far she is not too picky and will eat all of her veggies eventually. Sometimes she will eat some of them last, after some disapproval. Just keep experimenting with new things.

Walmart Romaine tends to be kind.. of.. I mean, gross. I’m being honest from what I find at the local Walmart.

I buy from the grocer that I work at and she noms it up.

Chacha only loves her romaine, italian parsley, and cilantro. I’ve tried new ones recently but to no avail. she will eat baby romaines tho.

Luigi eats pretty much anything! So I gotta be careful with him, hehe.

Just feed what he will eat – he’ll be fine.

I only feed romaine, green leaf, and parsley (usually only one of those lettuces per day, but I buy both each week). Otto just won’t eat anything else and sometimes when he has eaten new things he gets poopy butt. If I have leftovers of herbs or greens I’ve used for cooking I’ll feed them, but I think Hannah mostly eats them.

It sounds like a trend with these boys! My Blu (male) is VERY picky…and a slow eater..Oreo (female) will eat, I mean scarf down, practically any veggie or fruit I’ve given her. So I just give Blu what I know he’ll eat, like Elrohwen said…and he’s doing just fine. If it were up to him he would eat only green leaf lettuce and parsley to his heart’s content. He likes to snub romaine until he’s desperate enough to finish it off. He’s also a lot more sensitive to foods than Oreo is, so I’m careful with certain foods too.

Lol- that’s funny how Zeus won’t eat Walmart romaine. I had a hamster who wouldn’t eat brocolli from Market Basket, although he loved it from everywhere else. Must just be a certain taste/smell to that particular food from that particular store.
We can only feed them as much of a variety as they will eat, so I don’t think it’s worth stressing over. The “at least 3 different veggies a day” is the IDEAL diet, but not one that everybunny can eat. Somebunnies can’t eat greens at all, and others can’t have pellets either- hay only bunnies.
If you like to cook, you can find a recipe for pretty much every green there is, so if Zeus won’t eat it you could always cook it up. I always say I’m gonna do that with any excess greens, but I never do :p.

Gabby wouldn’t eat green bell pepper for weeks and then one night she snatched it out of my hand and bit into it. She loved it. Last night she ate one of the small sweet tomatoes I give the guinea pigs. I cut it into half for the first time before giving it to her and she ate it right up. Sometimes it matters the way the veggie is cut up.

I was just going to say that sometimes if you keep presenting it (and you can afford to waste), that a bunny will sometimes try something and like it!

A variety of greens is important if you feed less pellets as a balanced nutrition needs to be then gained by the greens/veggies.

Until I learned the variety of foods that guinea pigs needed and found out that rabbits can eat the same, my buns didn’t get much variety. Now they eat almost everything. Peppers, tomatoes, and now they love dill. At first they wouldn’t touch it. I’ll have to try mint for everyone next.
