        Hello Everyone,

So I feel like a terrible bunny mom tonight…I just got done giving the boys their once over, nail clip, etc. Poor Comet had mats on his feet and I don’t know how they could have become that way so quickly! I’ve been noticing that his feet need a trim for maybe a week but didn’t know they were matted! Poor guy. I trimmed them and I think they will be ok. But I also noticed that both Comet and Chubs have these…I want to say calluses on their heels? They are not ope sores and they don’t seem to bother them at all or be a source of discomort. They are also eating, pooping, flopping fine and normal. But it made me nervous, could it be sore hocks? I don’t know how they could have that because they are never caged, totally free roam. My apartment has hardwood but there is tons of rugs and stuff for them and Chubs never even walks on the floor. He uses the carpets to jump around and his little tube as a bridge across the bigger gap. Is this normal for them to develop calluses like humans would or should I be doing something? In addtion to that…I found these little pink areas on a couple of Chubs’ toes. Again…not seeming to bother him at all but it worried me too. I took a picture of that and of their heels. Tell me if you think there is something I should do! Pretty please. Also, anyone else had their bun get a mat in their fur? I’ve had Comet over a year now and have never seen that till now…Thanks!

Looks normal to me. I see calluses like that on Jerseys feet and had thought it normal wear on the heel. Well, I hope it is anyway!

You got really clear pictures of it!

Ditto. They are not sore or anything, just calloused. If you look at most bunny feet, and push away the fur on their hocks, there will be that pink area (not red) that is just part of their foot. Just keep nails trimmed and fur on the feet as free as possible from mats and they should just continue the hocks will just continue to stay that way.

The only bunny that I had a problem with mats on the feet was with Bailey. She had hind-leg weakness and so she couldn’t balance on her backside enough to clean her feet. I had to comb out the mats. I did avoid cutting when at all possible to prevent sore hocks due to thin fur.

I think almost all bunnies will have a small callus on their heels. It is normal as they have no pads- and if they are active- it is just going to wear the hair away.

Monkey has bare pink spots on her heels too. Nothing to worry about unless it starts to hurt them

You should get into a routine of checking the feet once a week to make sure the callous spots are not becoming red or inflamed. My lop, Bindi, also gets mats on his feet and I believe they were the cause of his inflamed sore hocks at one time. If the mats are big enough they can put too much pressure on the heel of the foot resulting in “pressure sores” (sore hocks). I trim his foot fur once a week now to avoid this.

Otto gets mats on his feet because his fur is longish (seems to be an issue with all of the hollands here). I just leave them, as they don’t seem to bother him and he gets much more upset and hurt when I try to get them off.

Thank you for all the feed back. Maybe I have just never noticed the little calluses before. I’m glad to know they are normal. Man, if I have to check their feet once a week, poor Comet will never come near me again…lol. Chubs is more forgiving about being picked up and poked and prodded but poor Comet gets sooooo scared no matter how careful I am and then he avoids me for a couple of days…lol. I will keep a close eye on him though, especially since I did trim his feet fairly short (for him) because of the mats…hope that doesn’t cause problems now! I didn’t even think about that being bad but he has such furry feet, even with the shorter hair, it’s still very thick so hopefully he is fine. I’m on vacation now (as of yesterday afternoon) and I have a great bunny sitter (my neighbor happens to work at my vet clinic, haha) so I will just ask her to keep an extra eye on him this week.

What about the little pink toes? Is that normal too?

Bailey has the pink bald areas near her toes, too, and my vet said it was perfectly fine, so long as they don’t become red/inflamed. She said to just check them out when I trim her nails, and that if they do look red, to put some neosporin on them. Oh, she also said to make sure to have a soft area, like carpet or a pet bed, but it sounds like your bunnies already have plenty of soft flooring. Chubs’ toes look okay to me

                          Hi

I’m new and I saw this post and I noticed the other day my bunnie had the bumps by his nails like on these photos.

Just wanted to clarify are these normal and should I be worried.

                          Thanks

                            Hi Bunnie,

I’m sorry to hear about the concerns you have for your rabbit’s nails! It is very observant of you to notice these bumps and investigate whether they are normal or not. What would be most informative is having photos. As mentioned above, they may just be normal calluses, but having a vet check them is always the safest bet!
