I’m working on bonding JT with his mom Meadow. I’m sure it will be successful. My only problem is that they look exactly alike (white, mini Rex’s). They are both fixed. If anything were to happen and I need to take one to the vet, I wouldn’t be able to tell if I’m bringing in a male or female. Is there a way to mark one, tattoo, ear clip, something so I can tell the difference? Even now during the bonding process, when I put them back in their pens, I wonder if I put them in the right place (I figure if I got it wrong they would be marking the “new” space).

        Thanks,

        Laura

Many times when females are spayed, the vet will add a permanent mark to the stomach area (it looks like a little blue blotch.) I know this happens alot with vets in shelters/rescues because they do so many they want to make sure they don’t get things mixed up and open up a bunny that has already been spayed. You might want check their tummy’s and see if that is the case with the mama.

spend alot of time with them.. my two bunnies are identical (siamese sables) and nobody can tell them apart but me. only because of the time ive spent with them

like i know one bunny will lie down when outside and the other wont, one bunny scans the other doesnt. just differences in personalities.

They should have different personalities, over time you will recognise them by that

                All good info. Thanks.

Right now with bonding the difference is she thumps and he humps.

I wonder if marking them with something non-toxic and temporary would work. Maybe a crayola magic marker or food coloring.

You could mark one temporarily in the ear until you can tell the difference by sight. A small mark with permanent marker would be ok I would think. It’s sometimes advised to write phone numbers in a rabbits ear as an preparation for emergency situations where you might become separated. So it’s not unheard to mark their ears.  You could use something non toxic as Eepster suggests since you’ll be able to remark it when it fades. A point midway down the ear where it’s not groomed off to easily.

Someone had a litter of baby bunnies and marked the backs of their necks with washable marker to tell them apart.

It might be easier if we had PICTURES of these two identical bunnies… lol.

You can use marker in their ears- like a Sharpie marker. I would recommend marking as a color and not a name- as the marker does get worn and hard to read- but you could still see a color easily.
We marked puppies like this (for ID reasons) at my vet clinic when we saw them for an appt. And when I bought Griff the breeder had the males marked with green in the left ear to verify sex so she did not have to resex them every time.

I have a few pics but it won’t let me upload them. You all got me thinking and when I really look at them I see JT has a scar on his nose. I forgot he had it. So that will do.

                          Now back to bonding.

                          THANKS!

Oh wow…they are beautiful….and yes very similar! I see your dilemma! I don’t know if it’s the light but the bunny on the right looks like he or she has less fur on the back of her ears resulting in pinker ears then the bunny on the left. Also the fur of the one on the right seems a bit more wavy the the one on the left. Is that true or just how the photo came out. Looks like you found a solution anyway with the scar on the nose.

They truly are so gorgeous — so soft and plush. Awww!

Is JT the one on the left? That bun looks thinner. And I see what BB said about the ear fur being thinner on the one on the right. Of course, that could change eventually.

Meadow is on the left, JT on the right. Rabbit Haven got JT’s brother, Calvin, and Rabbit Haven said the boys are wavy haird Rex’s. Meadow is not. But when they are shedding (which is ALL the time) you can’t tell the straight hair from the wavy. I didn’t notice that about the ears either, so that helps.

They are beautiful rabbits. I want to snuggle them! Like everyone else said for now maybe mark one ear, and in time you will be able to tell the personalities apart.
