I read RabbitPam’s Bunny Emergency post, and I’m in the process of cleaning her cage to prevent contamination, and I’m about to put ointment on them.  She jumped off the couch, which she does often and it isn’t a huge jump at all, considering she’s a huge bunny.  But, this time,  she attempted it from the BACK of the couch.  I literally turned my back for one second, and she flew.  Typically, it wouldn’t have been an issue but she flew into the dogs cage door.  Initially I thought she just tore one, it was hanging by her fur, and we got it off.  Then all of a sudden, beside me, there’s another nail.  This one wasn’t a clean break, it was a clean tear.  I was crying so I couldn’t tell 100% but my husband said it looked like there was a bulb attached.  This is scaring the crap out of me.  I called my emergency vet, only to find out “We don’t care for Rabbits.”  Well, can you tell me who does?  “No.”  REALLY REALLY GIFNVDRSIGNHRIGBHNRB.  So at this point, before I call around, I’m posting here, and cleaning her cage.  I’ll be checking here, so if anyone is on and answers my prayers, thank you!  I feel like such a horrible bunny mom

a torn nail can’t really be replaced, for now i would get blob it with the antibiodic ointment put as many soft blankets in her cage as you can.
she’ll definitely be sensitive for a while, but any bleeding should stop overnight. if it seems to affect her walking tomorrow, you can opt for an xray with the vet to see if there are any broken toes. a rabbit with a wonky toe from a bad landing isnt all that uncommon, especially if you have a evil kenevil bun.
we had a bun get a nail torn out from when she jumped thru a bike wheel (we used to keep them in the living room) and snagged it on a spoke.

remember, even when we hurt ourselves, it may look horrific for a few days, but it usually only really hurts for a little while after the injury.

Thank you This is the first time she’s ever really bled, like…it looks like someone shot my leg. It’s everywhere. She was also scared and trying to move everywhere, so I’m sure it looks worse than it is. Plus she’s white, so I’m all OMG MY LITTLE WHITE BABY. I mean, the only time she’s ever been “hurt” was when I got her spayed. And I cried when I dropped her off 😡 I feel psychotic, but this rabbit is like my child. Probably over reacted, but she seems to be doing ok. I cleaned the area as best I could, put some ointment on both toes. She isn’t eating her pellets (she typically FREAKS over them) but she will eat nanners. So she’s still eating, she’s just being a brat about it, and I can’t blame her 😡

I am so glad that longhairmike was able to help you as I know this was stressful for you.

Was the toe nail ripped off? Having a toe nail ripped off, leaving a nub is painful and looks awful. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t get infected and just watch closely for any other injuries. Here is a great link to advice that Dana Krempels gave someone in a similar situation (how to clean it and what to watch for) http://en.allexperts.com/q/Rabbits-703/ripped-toenail-1.htm

Your bunny is probably not eating due to the stress of it all, so just try to keep calm and pet her. She may just need a little time to settle down. So while you are observing her and making sure she is okay, it is a good time to call around and find a rabbit-savvy vet…when you are calm too. It’s important to have one anyway, even if she is back to normal soon and all is fine. But at the same time, if for whatever reason she ends up needing vet care, you’ll have one ready. So start looking around. Much better to have one before an emergency happens.

              HEALING VIBES to your bunny!

And you are NOT a horrible bunny mom. Toenail injuries are not uncommon. Many of us have had their bunnies go through it.   And who knew you had a bunny knevil on your hands.

Thank you so much, both of you I called my vet today and they can get her in Wednesday, a little out there, but hey, it’s an appointment! My issue is they take bunnies, but apparently their emergency vet doesn’t! So I’ll be looking around for a back up for sure!

I slept out with her last night, and she seemed to be fine. Definitely cleaning herself A LOT. The one does look gnarly, the other one is clean out She ate a little, mainly some of the treats I gave her But I know when I’m sick, all I want is chocolate covered pretzels and ice cream, so I can’t blame her!! She’s hopping around fine, not favoring a leg or limping. I’m cleaning her hands with a wet cloth every couple of hours and consistently putting ointment on a little at a time. My concern is with the one that got ripped out, I read somewhere it can lead to bone infections if it does in fact get infected. I’m trying to keep her pen as clean as possible, she’s got a soft blanket to lay on, I’m scooping her poop like mad. Every time I do, she looks at me like “MOM LET ME FINISH!”

We’re moving into a new, much bigger apartment on June first, so she’ll have room to roam, and she can binky and hop all she wants. We have hard wood floors now, so she doesn’t like walking on the non-carpeted areas. It’s almost like because there isn’t a lot of carpet, she’s making the most of her time by doing backflips and crazy crap! Ugh, I’m so glad she’s ok for now and I’m so thankful for you guys!!

How scary! It is so stressful when a pet gets hurt. :\ Emergency vets are terrible like that…
You may want to put together a little first aid kit for your rabbit. I have “Evel Knievel” bunnies as well.. Hehe! Over the course of a few months, I started putting some things together. I have: Critical Care, Kwik stop (for those toenails!! ), bath wipes, moleskin adhesives (for booboos on feet), Derma-vet and Quadritop for skin lesions, neosporin (original, not the one with pain relievers), New Skin, BeneBac, feeding syringes…. I also have a package of super awful but oh so delicious treats for them at all times in case I need to be cleaning a wound or something… It keeps them occupied and happy.
Of course, it’s not replacing seeing an actual vet, but I’ve had a really difficult time finding a vet that’s open 24 hours or an emergency vet that is even slightly knowledgeable in rabbits. I’ve also been turned down by vets in the middle of the day because they didn’t have enough time… This was during an emergency as well, when Velvateen broke his leg!
Definite healing vibes to the bun!

is it a front or back nail that?
if rear, try switching the litter to carefresh for the time being. sure it’ll get tracked out a lot more, but it will be a soft landing.

I definitely need to make a first aid kit for her! No doubt, especially if she’s going to keep this poo up!! And I can’t believe a vet would turn your bun away because they’re “too busy”! If my vet ever called me and said she needed to cancel a routine appointment because someone else had an emergency? Do it, by all means! Ugh, some people!

Mike, it’s her two front “big toes” The ones on the side of her feet.

Oh yes- he had broken his leg thee night before and we came in 8 am when they opened. They wouldn’t take him because some lady had an appointment to get her cat SHAVED! Grrr!!
You might be able to use a finger bandage like this
This should help prevent infection, if she keeps it on. Plus it will be much easier for you, not having to follow her around to clean up after her.
