Lately I’ve been wondering about papaya tablets and other rabbit supplements/vitamins. I see the tablets and things like Vita-sol, Calf manna, and other types of vitamin drops that promise a shinier coat/healthier skin at the pet store but I’ve never used any of them because I’m just not sure. I know how much stuff out there is marketed toward humans and not really in the buns best interest and somehow, bunny supplements sound more like a people product IMO (probably because I’m weird and I think of bunnies drinking protein shakes). Are these types of things a necessary part of a bun’s diet? Are they even actually healthy? And if so, any suggestions on which ones to use/not use?

Most of that stuff is marketed towards “show rabbits” and rabbit breeders.

The supplements for the water may cause them not to drink as much water as well because they may alter the taste of the water.

A house rabbit on the recommended diet through House Rabbit Society should not need supplements.

I agree with Sarita- a bunny on a good diet would not need that. My husband pointed out a rabbit supplement for show rabbits when we were at the farm store getting stuff for my horse. The el cheapo bags of pellets are made of inferior/cheap ingredients- so the supplement could make a difference for them. But I am not so sure that the stuff in it is healthy long term (sunflower seeds, etc). And of course they have to make it “tasty” for the rabbit to eat it so they can sell more- so that probably means something sweet- so sweet and fatty. And show bunnies are typically not meant to live as long has house bunnies- as they get older they are not as efficiently reproductive. : (

Schroeder was on el cheapo pellets, limited hay and no veggies when I got him. Within 6-8 months of being on limited Oxbow pellets, unlimted hay and veggies- he got a thick plush coat.

I had asked my vet about this because I was using those vitamin drops you put in the water and she said it was completely unnecessary. Most pellets are heavily fortified anyways!

Ok, that is kind of what I thought. The only thing that made me second guess was that I know the papaya tablets are sold here on BB so I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Thanks!
