I was about to get in my car to make the 3 hour drive back home after packing my whole apartment when i noticed Bing hadn’t really moved all morning. He was avoiding me (for him, that is unual), didn’t eat his whole tablespoon of pellets, touch his hay, and refused his morning papaya tablet. He didn’t take a raisin when I offered it to him either. Then I noticed he had peed but didn’t lift his tail because it was all over his backside. Once I saw the pee, I knew something was seriously wrong. He had only ever done that when he was on pain mids after his nueter. (And he is only one, so it wasn’t age related!) I knew it was stasis and it scared me so badly.

I’ve read about and was even taking preventative measures for Bing since he eats anything (he is like a goat….its really strange). He was getting a dose or two of Laxatone twice a week (depending if he was shedding really bad or if he miraculously got into something) and two papaya tablets a day. But he managed to still get it. So I rushed him to the vet…or I tried to. The drive took FOUR HOURS and I was calling my vet every half hour to update him and see what I could do for him in the car…it was super scary.  After the third hour, he laid down in his carrier and I even think I saw him eat a piece of hay.

Once we got there, everyone was gone ecept the receptionist and BOTH vets. They had waited for me to arrive. The worst part was when they took him out to weigh him, he never actually came back. They did all of their tests and discussions away from me, which made me nervous! They took an xray, ran a tube into his stomach and insterted mineral oil to break up a mass, and gave him shots of fluids. They sent me home with pain meds, Crital Care, and upped his dosage of Laxatone until he was pooping and eating regularly…

That was Friday. He is much better today. I wanted to get on here and tell you guys on Friday and ask what to do. It was my first instinct, until I saw his wet bum… I want to just take a minute  thank everyone who contributes to these forums. I don’t post as often as some of you, but I read a LOT of them. My vet said it takes a really specific and tuned in owner to notice the signs so quickly, and its only because of you guys and the support you offer here. I really really appreciate everything.

        Ashley

Poor Bingley! Thank goodness you were able to get him in as soon as possible! How terrifying to have to drive so far tho!

You did the right thing by acting first. Oftentimes people want to first come on this site and ask what they should do, but since this is a forum, there’s no guarantee that you will get a response immediately. We would rather people skip the forum and head right to the vet if they think something is wrong. Our advice in this situation would have been to get him to a vet.

So I’m assuming you are in school 4 hours away from your vet. Have you looked for an exotics vet, or at least an emergency clinic that will see bunnies near school? You really should have a place to go close by in case of an emergency.

it might be hard to see because I took this from my phone, but I got a picture of him flopping! This is the first one since friday, so i take it as a good sign. (Ahhh, he just did another one! Yay!)

                Beka,
I know… I have looked around and I just don’t seem to get the same positive vibes as I do from my vet here in Austin. The emergency centers also scare me because I couldn’t find anyone who seemed to know anything about rabbits. The university is about a 50 minute drive from Dallas, but there is a ‘rabbit-savvy’ vet about halfway to Dallas in Corinth. It is my backup vet in case I do have to take him in while I’m up there (I normally take him for appts when I’m on break in Austin). For some reason though, since my car was packed to the brim, my apartment was empty and I had a full tank of gas and was about to make the trip anyways…I thought it would just be better to take him here. It wasn’t logical, I know. I just don
t trust a lot of people with my Bing and I wanted to make sure he got what he needed.

But, facing the music, I know I need to invest some quality time in a vet up there because after I graduate next year, I’m staying in the area. *sigh*

PM me, I live in Dallas and know quite a few rabbit savvy vets.

Ashley, I am so glad you took him to the vets, and they sound like they really care and were there for you when you needed them. I’m glad he’s on the mend.

I just wrote in another post how important it is to take action by getting to a vet, rather than delaying with internet advice, no matter how good. Bunnies go downhill quite fast, and the time spent calling and driving may be a life saving action, but the internet search could delay it with dire results. I am so glad you feel helped by this website, and yet did the right thing!

Your regular vet sounds very compassionate and professional, so I have to wonder also if the vet would be willing to do a phone consult (if necessary) with a vet closer to school. That’s another option too. I am so thankful everything worked out okay in this situation. I just worry tho… :o(

Yeah, I might ask him about that Beka. I love them so much it will be hard to say goodbye!
Bingley is completely recovered and is eating his hay and veggies with vigor! He has even taken up his hobby of trying to escape nightly. He’d much rather be under my bad than in his castle I made him for some reason… I also discovered through this experience that he had taking a liking to the Laxotone he was taking before this happened. I had to roll pellets around a big glop of it and feed it that way. But since he wasn’t eating anything, I had to do it with a syringe and he ATTACKED it (in a good way ) and was really excited to be eating it lol. It was quite funny.
