Me and my silly dreams. I was looking at programs and there happens to be one in Hawaii that is like the ultimate dream fit for me. Now I’m not saying that I’m going to move to Hawaii, but I am curious about all the what ifs. My question is, are rabbits okay with flying? Or would the stress be too much for them? If I ever was to live out my dream, there would be no other way to move them there.

i’m sure Usako could fly,, but i would still want her to let me have the controls for the landing.

Hmm… says that rabbits who are afraid of the vacuum might not handle flying very well. Leopold could care less about the vacuum and has actually gotten sucked by the hose a couple times because he wouldn’t leave it alone (too curious, I guess). Wooly freaks out at the vacuum, but has been getting better since he has been sharing space with Leopold.

I just thought of something this morning (yes, I was dreaming about taking the rabbits somewhere). What would happen if you got stuck somewhere? The last time we went to Hawaii (for vacation), there was a huge delay in Chicago. There were about a dozen of us that were supposed to go from that flight (Chicago to LA) to the Hawaii flight (LA to Kona). They said they were going to hold the flight, but when we got to LA the flight had already left (they said we missed it by 10 minutes). Never mind the fact that we were super POed. LOL! But we had to spend the night in a hotel in LA because they didn’t have another flight until the next morning. What if something like that happened? What would happen to the rabbits?!

hawaii has a pretty strict quarantine, you would want to find out if that applies to rabbits, as well as dogs and cats.

as far as what would happen if you got stuck somewhere, that’s something you should ask the airline about. different airlines handle animals differently. you might also want to see if there are any airlines that allow you to take rabbits in the cabin as carry-ons. i know a lot don’t, which i don’t understand, since they allow dogs and cats, and i would think a rabbit would be less of an annoyance to other passengers. when i flew to pick up my sphynx kitten, he and his sister (who i was helping transport) meowed the entire flight!

Lag, fantastic! Saved that adorable pix immediately.

Yes, rabbits can fly although it is much better for them to be in a carrier with you on the plane than below in a cargo hold like dogs. It also needs to be researched with the airlines to find out their rules, accommodations and costs. We’ve had members here consult us about flying their pets when moving. Suffice it to say that the trips that were shorter and within the US were easier to arrange than the ones from overseas. We had someone write a post from Hawaii and another from Mainland China. You can search the forums for their posts, but in a nutshell, it’s possible.

Here’s a good story from Blanche Bounds on flying her rabbits from Saudi Arabia to Texas:

*sigh* Why does such an awesome program have to be there in Hawaii? I would be so afraid that they would find some reason to quarantine them.

I found this, it was under livestock information.
                          Rabbits:

Require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), also known as a health certificate. The CVI must be issued and signed by a State, Federal, or accredited veterinarian within seven days prior to arrival in Hawaii.
The CVI must list and give a description of the rabbit(s) in the shipment, must state that the rabbit(s) were not showing signs of infectious, contagious and/or communicable diseases and were found free of external parasites.
Rabbits are required to enter the State only through the Honolulu International Airport where they are required to be submitted by an agent of the airline carrier to the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility for inspection. Hours of inspection are 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Once inspection is complete and all entry requirements have been met, the rabbits may be released to the importer

It doesn’t sound like quarantine to me – you should email them and ask them. The CVI is pretty common stuff.

It talks about the possibility of having to have your cat or dog quarantined, but it’s difficult to tell if that would apply to a rabbit. So you think as long as you have the CVI, then they will let you have your rabbits right away?

Not that I really need to know this information now. I just get these crazy ideas sometimes and sometimes it’s nice to know how feasible something actually is. I guess it’s something to keep in the back of my mind after I have finished my masters.

from the sounds of it, they just look over the paperwork and the rabbit. if the animal is visibly ill, they may quarantine it, but a healthy animal shouldn’t have a problem.
