Arduina Trouble Wayne ate a poisonous plant this morning.. about 2 leaves from our avocado plant (plus another leaf I pulled from her mouth).

We have had house guests this past week, so the bunnies had to give up their room and they have been stuck in the pen in the living room.  Our house guest is moving in to the the basement apartment, once the guy who currently lives there, moves out next week.  They’re all friends so no bid deal, its just it has made things a little more cramped…

How it happened:  S.O. let Arduina and Leo out this morning and gave them their breakfast (pellets), but didn’t slide the tupperware food bin all the way under the table (where the plants are), and thus Arduina used the food bin as a step to get up on the table and munch away.  The bin probably shouldn’t be there, but there’s not much room for it it anywhere else.  I have lots of start plants for the garden and so does our new house guest.

We took Arduina to the Emergency Vet right away (2 miles away!) after I got off the phone with them.  Dropped $100 walking through the door  (since its Sunday morning) and they took her in immediately.  They are going to try giving her activated charcoal to absorb the toxin (since bunnies can’t throw up).  I signed all the paperwork and handed over my credit card.. now we’re just waiting for the update call this afternoon.

        On a side note:

I think we should add to the first aid sticky post.  Add things like what to do in an emergency (when you’re on the way to the vet, vet not open yet, after vet was called, or waiting to hear back from the vet).  I found some of the poisonous post, but the weblinks didn’t work anymore and the hotlines didn’t matter because I had already called the vet and was waiting to hear back.  I didn’t find the post about the activated charcoal until I got home from the vet, and I have no idea how much to give?  It just seems like in times like these, searching the forums takes too long.  Like one time I was searching for how much simethicone to give.  So we should also include dosages in there too.

          Please keep us updated!

I always say call the vet office first before ever searching around on the internet – hopefully at least an emergency vet is open.

I adopted to a lady once who’s bunny had ate rat poison and the vet did the activated charcoal – I don’t think anyway this is something most people have on hand and if they did, I think the vet could dose it for you.

I will! The vet tech is supposed to call me this afternoon.. waiting waiting..

Yeah I first searched to see if the plant was on the toxics list, and it was, and then called the emergency vet hospital, but had to wait for a tech to call me back.. thats when I started searching to see what could be done. Thats why I think having one sticky post with everything in it would still be useful. Lucky for us the vet hospital is 2 miles away, but for some people its 2 hours away.

Pets do not like activated charcoal- so in order to get the dose into them it is best to tube them and put the dose right into their stomach. <— This must obviously be done at a vet.

Just for your own curiousity- when you pick her up ask them how much she needed and if they could show you the amount by showing you the large syringes and how many of those she needed. Anyone that has ever had to feed CC- would know how difficult/seemingly impossible it would feel to try to get a bunny to take that much of something that they don’t like. And like with any other feeding- you have to be very careful not to let the rabbit aspirate the charcoal into their lungs instead of swallowing.

Please keep us updated. I am wonderinging if they sedated her- passed the tube and gave the charcoal or if they tried to give it orally. Sedation would be required to stomach tube a rabbit I would think since they are so small it would be hard to keep their mouth open with a “block” made for that purpose and pass the tube. Plus bunny teeth could sever the tube which would require removal- probably thru sedation.

The vet said they would try giving Arduina the activated charcoal through a syringe first.  If she didn’t take that, they would move to plan B, which was doing the stomach tube, I assume with sedation.  I haven’t heard yet from the tech..   *anxiously waiting by the phone*

That’s good to know Katnip – I wasn’t sure how this was given and I sure would never try this at home. I think having a vet administer this is a must.

I got tired of waiting, so I called the vet.  They said Arduina is doing good!!  She was eating a bit of carrot and pumpkin and pooped a little, with a little diarrhea (expected).  The vet was impressed how well Arduina did, she took the charcoal through a syringe just fine!  So they didn’t have to do the tube thing.  Wahoo!

They are going to watch her tonight and I’ll call in the morning to see when I can pick her up!

Leo here is a little lonely, but happy for some peace and quiet and getting his full share of food.

I’m relieved that she’s doing okay! It had to have been scary for you. We had a potted lily in our room for a while and Hodari was always hopping behind it. One day after she’d been playing around it I noticed that lilies are on the list of toxic plants in the rabbit book I was reading. I watch her like a hawk, but it would’ve been so easy for her to get a bite if she’d wanted to, even with me sitting there. Hopefully Arduina comes home feeling happy and well so she can go back to sitting on her pillow, looking disapproving.

The First Aid post is a direct quote from another source, so it’s locked to remove it from further discussion. It’s just a springboard during an emergency, while waiting to get connected to your vet. It should not be viewed as a substitute for calling the vet, just more like quick help in a crisis. For that reason, we really shouldn’t offer any more specific treatment suggestions, dosage of anything for example, so that folks will know that you need a vet, not the internet. If no one calls back quickly on your first try, you can always put your bunny in the car and drive to the nearest vet hospital. Any vet will handle an emergency with an animal, and if your vet is not far (2 miles) and open but not answering, always feel free to just put the bunny in the carrier and drive over. A vet will see an emergency that walks in the door faster than returning a phone call.

I picked up Arduina today!!  She’s home now.    The vet said when she heard a bunny was here for eating something she’s not supposed, the vet immediately knew it was Arduina.  The vet also said the charcoal stuff comes in a suspension and it took her a full hour to administer it to Arduina through a syringe, but better/safer than doing the tube thing.

RabbitPam: I totally agree with you, calling the vet is the first thing to do in an emergency.  (I was lucky we only live 2 miles from a really good vet hospital with 24h service, but I know other people aren’t and live quite far from an emergency vet.)  But I think providing information for people so that they can identify an emergency, is useful (when does it become such a problem that we need to go to a vet), as in knowing with what symptoms to look for (example: not eating/not pooping) or like what plants are toxic.

So keeping useful links updated. Here’s a link I found with poisonous plants for all animals: http://www.3bunnies.org/poisonous_plants.htm.  If a plant is poisonous, vet treatment as soon as possible is necessary.  And there’s not much you can do on the way to the vet (as I found out -I just gave Arduina hay to eat, to keep things moving through since bunnies can’t throw up).

Also, if we suggest for people to have stuff in their first aid kit, they should know how to properly use it.  I don’t have thermometer in mine, because I don’t know what a bunny’s temperature should be let alone how to take it.  So as a warning, if something is on the list, but you don’t know how to use, don’t.

Arduina is back to her normal self.. lookin’ for more trouble.  She’s been running around crazy as usual and back to eating a ton.

S.O. said she probably enjoyed the vet because of all the extra special attention and yummy treats (pumpkin!).  The vet did say they let her run around the place, I’m sure she loved the exploring.

That is funny that the vet immediately suspected Arduina when he heard there was a bunny there that ate something she should not have. I guess she is a legendary troublemaker (and you are a legendary bunny Mom that takes the bunny to the vet when there is trouble).

I am glad to hear that she is doing good. I can’t imagine trying to syringe feed for an hour. I remember a time when I had to give activated charcoal to a kitten at work- and it was awful (for me and for the kitten I bet too)- I had to give the kitten a “mini bath” afterwards- we were both covered in charcoal (even though I had a old surgical gown on and the kitten was wrapped in a towel).

OMG What a scare!! I’m glad I got here-when it was resolved with a happy ending That is too funny your vet knew it was your bunny who was in trouble

Yesterday Arduina knocked off another plant from that table… not quite high enough when she’s on her tippy toes .  We can’t wait to move them back into their room. Right now we feel bad her and Leo are all cooped up in the 4×4 pen.

Also, I think this weekend we’re going to get the rest of plants in the garden, wahoo (lets hope there’s no more frosts, I already got the bunny’s veggies in ).

I’m glad Arduina is OK . Some bunnies are just more mischevious and likely to eat things- just like some kids. My son never ate anything he wasn’t supposed to, but my daughter was comstantly gobbling down bizarre things. At one point I had to call Poison Control four times in a week! I kept wondering if they called caller ID- it was mortifying. But yeah… there are bunnies like that too :p. My BunBun seems to be one of them (apparently my daughter wasn’t enough trauma for me). I don’t keep any plants just in case- I know he would get them. I have beautiful flowers and bushes in my garden and I used to love to cut bouquets and bring them inside- there’s just nothing like fresh flowers in a pretty vase for decorating. But it’s just not worth it- even if I put them way up high, a leaf or petal could drop off and end up in BunBun’s greedy little mouth. Oh well. The link for poisonous plants is a great idea- I’m going t check it out. Some plants are highly toxic and I’d like to know which ones, so I could be extra careful washing my hands and changing my clothes if I worked with them.
