› Forum › DIET & CARE › How many times a day do you feed your buns?
Right now, I feed them three times a day. Once in the morning when I get up around 8 am, then when I get back from work around 6-7 pm, and then again before I go to sleep at 11 pm or so. I feed them pellets and veggies at these times.
It’s starting to get excessive, so I want to reduce to twice a day. How many times do you feed your buns and at what times? What are good time intervals if I want to feed twice a day?
I feed veggies around 6 pm, and pellets before bed. They each get 1/8 of a cup of pellets, except the baby. he gets his dish refilled when needed.
I feed both my buns at 7:30 am they get there pellets kamdyn gets 1/4 cup of pellets and sunshine get 1/3 cup of pellets. Then at 9:00 pm everynight i give them both vegetables.
Veggies and pellets (1/2 t for Alex, 1 t for Rosie) in the morning and evening (7am-ish and 7pm-ish), hay at night + any other time it looks like they need it.
So far… weekdays is 2 times @ 6-7am, when I get up, and 9pm, when I get back. Weekends I may feed less qty but more frequently as I play or try to train them.
Half their veggies around 10am, pellets around 5pm and the rest of the veggies around 10pm and of course unlimited hay.
We feed our bun three times a day, in part because this is the schedule we have for our cats. (One of our cats has an over-eating problem, so we have to carefully regulate her feeding.) We feed Captain Danger first thing in the morning (~7am), then when we get home from work (~5pm) and then just before we go to bed (~midnight).
We give Captain Danger a “salad” at each meal, but he also gets 1 T. pellets at his morning meal–we call it his “cereal” He has access to hay at all times. He gets treats (e.g. piece of carrot or apple) every couple of days or so. Our previous bunny got a lot more treats and pellets, but he died (way too young) in part due to complications that arose from dental issues, so we’re much less treat-oriented with Captain Danger’s diet. Fortunately he’s an excellent hay and vegetable eater, so he doesn’t seem to mind one bit
Tablespoon of pellets in morning, more hay, and veggies at night 9:30 – 10 pm, and more hay. there is always hay
I feed the buns veggies around noon, then their pellets around 10pm.-11pm. before I got to bed.
I feed mine twice — in the morning and in the evening. Everything is just split in half. (and of course, enough hay to last all day at least. I do add a little handful though in the evenings — something about fresh hay out of the box even if they have hay in their bin seems to make them eat it more)
Morning and evening meals of veggies and pellets. They have hay all day and I freshen it up several times a day (I agree BB, new hay is way tastier). Before bed they get a big Romaine leaf and I sprinkle some pellets all over their cage for “foraging time”. Lately they’ve been spoiled and also get flower petals before bed.
I just do greens in the morning – a big pile. At night, refresh hay, fresh water (morning also) and treats (morning also).
Only half of my rabbits get pellets and those rabbits just get their bowl filled – they don’t eat much anyway so I don’t really measure it out as I should. In fact, they hardly eat pellets at all so I might fill their dish (1/4 cup) up once a week.
I feed morning and evening – pellets and veggies each time.
In the morning we feed around 7am (weekdays that’s when we are out of the shower and dressed, and on weekends DH usually wakes up around that time anyway). At night we feed right before bed, so typically 10pm or so.
Thanks for all the input. I have started to feed once in the morning and once at night. Both veggies and pellets and they always have hay. I just hate seeing Cheddar standing up to look into the kitchen to see if I’m at the fridge before bedtime…but will have to resist.
Two and a half times a day… both pellets and veggies in the a.m. and then veggies when I get home and pellets like 2 hours later. Banner’s still on the all you can eat diet. Good luck resisting the cute begging!
I have 2 bunnies, so they get a total of 1/2 cup pellets each day. I feed 1/4 cup pellets in the morning, veggies around dinner, and 1/4 cup pellets around midnight or later (I tend to sleep really late, lol).
Fill up both hay bins in the morning and give Pacey 1/8th cup pellets and Dini 1/4th cup pellets (it’s all he can handle). Then at 4-5pm I feed Pacey 1 cup of veggies/herbs and sometimes a piece of fruit and Dini gets 1-2 pieces of (right now) Parsley. Then before lights out Pacey gets another 1/8th cup pellets more hay and dini 1/8th cup and more hay.
Sometimes I feed Pacey more veggies and less pellets Dini’s always remains the same.
In the late morning early afternoon. Right now Momo gets about 1/3 cup pellets, and a heap of greens. She normally eats the greens early, then nibbles pellets through out the day. And a steady supply of hay. Before bed I usually take a toilet paper tube and put a slice of apple in the middle, then stuff both ends fully with something like orchard grass and give her that.

I hear ya Cheddar33. It’s pure torture for a human to have to face that cute adorable fuzzy bunny face with with curious front facing ears, wiggling nose and hopeful eyes.
Jack does this to me alot. He gets a banana treat with glucosamine mix for his arthritis pretty much once a day, (or at least 4 -5 times a week). I have to mix it in a little bowl. Now, ANYtime I go to the kitchen and make a utensil-to-dish noise, he comes running out and stands there with a terribly hopeful face…and he actually starts chompin’ at the bit.. It’s like he’s making “Nom Nom” noises before he has anything in his mouth. I need to get video of this because it’s absolutely ridiculously cute, yet sad because I can’t give him banana everytime he hears a dish!
All I can say is…Will Power!!—Don’t let bunny cuteness sucker you in…Stay strong!
BB, Monkey does something simila. Her and Smudge’s pen is right by the kitchen, so Monkey gets all excited every time someone goes in. And naturally, everything in the world is hers, so we MUST be going to get her Highness a treat… of course. *sigh* If she had her way, she’d roll across the floor instead of hop… lol
Momo can see our fridge from her pen. She perks up whenever the fridge opens. And goes absolutely bananas if she hears the rusting from the bags her produce is in. You would think we were starving her! One time I was opening her cage to set her food bowl in and she jumped up the side of the pen, and did a back flip off.
I just add about 1/4 – 1/2 cup pellets to my buns’ j feeders everytime I see the level is low and aim to keep it filled for them all the time although they don’t eat too many pellets. I’d say they eat about 1/4 to 1/2 cup pellets each day. I always try to have plenty of hay available and freshen their hay each day or so. In the late afternoon or evening, they each get 4-5 pieces of diced dried papaya. Petie is the only vegetarian, and I jam the core of a half a head of red lettuce in his veggie twister holder which takes him a couple days to go through. For variety, I switch with a bunch of cilantro once or twice a day after he’s finished with the red lettuce.
I feed mine once a day in the evenings. Sometimes I throw in hay in the mornings as well. They all seam to be very happy and healthy.
I’ve been doing a twice a day thing, but notice that, especially for Fiver and sometimes Mimzy now too, they prefer for me to drop a little extra hay in sometime during the day for a pick me up. Pip I just have to do that because she goes through hers like a hot knife through butter. >.<
I do notice the ‘freshened’ hay is much appreciated by my bunnies. That may be all they need to find their appetite if it happens to be waning.
The not giving in and just feeding the treats….ugh…SOOOO hard! 0_o;
I feed Huckleberry her veggies in the morning when I get home from work around 7:30 and then her pellets at night before I go to work around 9:30. She has a basket of hay that I add to about twice a week. I toss it around so she doesn’t just eat the fresh and let the old stay at the bottom.
I usually add more hay to Tait’s box morning and night. He gets an 1/8 cup of pellets in the am and pm and I usually only give him his veggies right before I go to bed. He is really weird and will not eat them when I am around :S I think I have only seen him eat one piece of lettuce before.
I used to hand feed Mimzy and he would love it. Now he is much more private…lolz. “Iz eetin’ Mum…u go ‘way nao!” ^_^
Oh my gosh…I’m overfeeding my buns! I feed them greens and carrots ALL THE TIME! I’m not kidding. I wake up around 9-10am, put veggies and carrots and replenish throughout the day, every time it runs out. That goes on until night time before I sleep. Sometimes, I resist the urge to feed them because I’ve read about obese bunnies…BUT…I found out one time that when I’m not looking, my husband feeds them too! He said he couldn’t resist those cute eyes and we’re-so-hungry looks that he feels he has to give them food each time! On top of those foods, they have unlimited access to hay as well. Oh gosh, what am I doing to my rabbits. And in spite of these things, you’d think I’m starving them. They stay in our kitchen so they always know when we open the fridge door. Every time I get something from the fridge, they instantly perk up and start clawing at their walls. As if waiting for me to feed them! Gaaahhhh!!!!
They get hay all day, a handful of pellets sprinkled throughout their condo at about 7am, and then they get their veggies at about 8 or 9pm. I think it’s a fine schedule, but it could just be because the buns and I are so used to it!
My bun gets additional fresh hay two or three times a day, veggies in the afternoon, and pellets at night. I tried doing things different ways, but this what works best for her.
Hay all day. And two meals:
Breakfast (about 8am): fresh veggies and pellets. about a 1/8-1/4 of a cup if I am going to be gone at work all day, and more like 1 TBL if I know my roommate and I will be home all day and likely to spoil her with more pellets or treats.
Dinner (about 7pm): fresh veggies
Fruit and treats are really random. I would say maybe once or twice a week but it all depends on what’s around the house and how much I am home.
I give my bunnies a small amount of pellets twice a day. I replenish their hay whenever I see it getting low, and make sure that they have plenty to get them through the night. I have a few different varieties of hay and I give them different ones, or different blends. I have about 10 different veggies to choose from at various times to give to them. Instead of giving them one or two big mixed salads, or veggie plates a day I give moderate quantities of individual veggies throughout the day–usually about 7 different servings, starting early in the morning and the last serving around midnight. One of the servings is a small amount of fruit, usually diced apple or pear. I work at home, and I’m here most of the time, so it’s easy for me to give out all of those servings of veggies.
