Umm, do bunnies close their eyes when they sleep? I’ve never seen mine close their eyes except when I pet them but I’ve seen pictures of bunnies with their eyes closed. Mine seem to stare off into space almost all day.

          Not all do

My Chacha will sometimes close hers halfway. Other times, she will loaf up (sticking all limbs under her body) and sleep with her eyes open. I believe rabbits have a 3rd eyelid from what I’ve read. It is because if a predator is around they ‘appear’ to be awake and can escape them.

Rabbits can sleep with their eyes open. It’s a little disconcerting at first, but you’ll get used to it = D

Not sure how well you can see my profile pic, but Hodari was asleep when I took it. She usually snuggles down and gets that blank stare after a bout of binkying; when I move, she rouses herself and her eyes LIGHT Up again.

So how do you tell if they are sleeping vs just staring into space?

                  Snoring is a good indicator…

My Rosie is the only bun I’ve had that completely closes her eyes to sleep. You can tell if they’re asleep by their body language – even though their eyes are open, they don’t look very alert or responsive to minor things.

If their noses stop wiggling, they are sleeping

I could always tell mine HAD been sleeping by the perked up “huh? what? you talkin to me?” looks I’d get when I talked to them. lol Also, they have sleeping positions. Lolli will loaf or stretch out with her head flat on the floor. Or if her head isn’t completely down, it will kind of droop. And staring off into space is a good indicator of them sleeping.

Mimzy scared the heck out of me today by sleeping with his eyes open. He was obviously dreaming because all sorts of parts of him were twitching. I gently blew towards his face and his nose would start wiggling, but he wouldn’t come awake all the way, so to be sure he wasn’t having a seizure, I opened his pen. That woke him up pretty fast. ^_^

He has been SO still at times that I was terrified that he was gone. But when I start calling his name really loud, he perks right up…and I get some pretty stiff disapproval.

I think that as long as he can display stiff disapproval, then we need not fear ; )

That has to be a lop thing. Cause I would yell and yell at Eddie to get his attention. When he’d FINALLY perk up and look at me, I’d get the grumpy face. (And sometimes the butt) LOL

Momo sleeps with her eyes half open. I love the way she “buns” herself up with all of her limbs under her. Sometime she even folds her ears flat against her back too. It is so cute. The first time I saw her flop out and sleep it scared the crap outta me. I woke her up and got that “what’s your problem?” look. Then I remembered reading somewhere that when bunnies relax, they REALLY relax.
