I was reading an article the other day and it said that female rabbits shouldn’t have a water bowl because if it becomes we that there dewlap can become infected. I was wondering if i should get rid of my females food bowl and give her a water bowl?

It’s never been an issue with my female rabbits – not all dewlaps especially in spayed females who are at the proper weight are large. If she is drinking well from her water bowl and you aren’t having an issue with a wet dewlap then I wouldn’t change it.

That might be more common advice for someone with a hutch rabbit that they briefly feed once a day- and might tend not to notice a problem starting- so it is easier to avoid the possibility of a problem.

I think the more accepted advice for house bunnies seems to be whatever works best for the bunny and situation- with actually leaning towards rabbits that have certain medical conditions to use a water bowl so they don’t have to “work so hard” to get a drink.

My female had a water bottle when I first got her, but I switched over to a bowl very soon after (the bottles are very loud and may leak). She has a little dewlap but has shown no issues with the bowl. She sometimes sticks her nose into the water bowl, lol.

You will need to refresh the water more often, but bowls are really good.

I had a similar experience to LoveChaCha. I used to use a bottle, but now we use two heavy bowls of water that I changed daily and put in the dishwasher for sanitation. I find them to be cleaner, and the bunnies seem to drink more water now than they did with the bottles.

Our Momo has a dewlap, and we’ve never had a problem with the water bowls. The dewlap just turns orange occasional from carrot consumption, lol.

Thanks I have had rabbits for over 20 years and this is my first female. I have a male rabbit that drinks out of a bowl. I personally love the bowls my rabbits drink more out of a bowl then a bottle.

The problem in the dewlap is probably due to lingering moisture caught there, like in a crumpled bath towel. Just pet her and feel if she’s dry when you do, and if not, you can take a tissue or towel or comb and wipe her dry and comb out her fur there so no moisture or bacteria can linger.
