First off..just wanted to say…Bailey is a GIRL! I was right

Bailey was very nervous at the Vet. She doesn’t like to be picked up but I just assumed most rabbits were like that. She wouldn’t let the Vet flip her on her back to check out her “area”, so she had to do it from underneath.

Bailey started breathing really heavy and they had to put a towel over her to calm her down. The Vet told me she is a high risk bunny for surgery b/c of how skittish she is and that she might not make it through treatment or anesthesia.

I also asked how many spays she has performed and she said only “5”. Should I get a second oppinion? The vet agrees it’s the best thing for a rabbit to get fixed but now I’m scared.

Plus the cost of surgery, anesthesia, and medicine will cost $378..Does that sound right?

        Help!

I would look for a vet with much more experience with rabbits. This vet doesn’t sound terribly confident if she thinks a rabbit this young and being “skittish” is a high risk.

The Vet seems to think that Bailey might also break her spine while they are trying to treat her b/c of how much she was kicking today.

My Hannah hates to be picked up and kicks so much that the vet techs start kneeling on the ground in case she breaks free (or leaning over the table). She’s spayed and has been put under for molar spurs with no problems.

I’m sure Bailey will be fine, but I would definitely find another vet who has more confidence with rabbits.

That doesn’t make sense to me at all. Try a different vet, one with more experience, do you have an exotics vet near you?

(The price is on the high end, but not by much $200-400 is average.)

OK- I just found a low cost spay/neuter clinic!! They said the Vet has done lots and lots of surgeries. (especially recently) It only will cost me $95!! What a relief

That is a relief! I’m confused like the others about the first vet. Oh well. Now you have found someone who is more experienced and cheaper to boot! Good luck with everything!

Ummm….my opinion, on that low cost spay/neuter clinic – meet the vet and find out what they mean by lots and lots of surgeries (on rabbits, are they spays, etc…). Usually spay/neuter clinics are for dogs and cats although nowadays more clinics are also doing rabbits but I doubt lots and lots.

The clinic was recommended by a rabbit rescue that said they do a really good job. The receptionist was just referring to doing a lot in the last month (probably because of Easter and trying to adopt rabbits out)

                            Good.

My rabbit was a ball of hormones and did not want to sit still at all. She still doesn’t like to sit still, but she is not as crazy as she used to be

i’m glad that you found somewhere else that fits your budget and also better

yeah…I should have looked into that first..but I had NO idea there was such a thing as low cost neuters for rabbits..thank goodness I live in a big city, otherwise it would probably be unheard of…

I think this stresses the point of finding a good exotic vet. My dog/cat vet sees a few rabbits each year. But because I have had reptiles for so long I already had a long standing relationship with an amazing exotic vet hospital. I drive 40 out of my way for them, but the peace of mind is so worth it.

                                  Great!!!

LOL I will share the low cost spay neuter experience I had!! I decided to get my bunny spayed being a first time rabbit owner and just exploring what was right…and I phoned around. I figured since dogs cost around 2-300 to fix, and cats less then that…then bunnies should be LESS!!! So I was astounded at the 300-500 quotes I was getting. Shocked. I phoned the low cost spay/neuter clinic and they told me-they only do dogs and cats. So funny when I look back-that was the awakening to what is vet care for rabbits lol (Of course that was quotes and I screened many many vets thoroughly before choosing my vet)

My only tip-ENSURE you get pain meds. And might as well get an e-cone even if they don’t include it (only a few dollars) JUST in case

Wow it is pricey for some of you guys. My vet charged $180 for the spay. Pain meds and short vet stay included.

Lolli’s spay was about $250. I did phone around to low cost speuter places but those were only for cats and dogs.
