Someone left a bottle of lysol bleach on the bathroom floor. I went looking for my bunny and found him licking some of the dried stuff on the side of the bottle. I think he had only been there a couple seconds, but it’s bleach. Is he going to die? Is there anything i can do?? I can’t call a vet becuase it’s 2 in the morning.

Hopefully he stopped after the 1st taste. Keep a close eye on him and his behaviour. You could call an emergency vet and ask for their advice. Or try National Animal Poison Control Center 1-800-548-2423 or a more local version. I’m not positive, but I don’t think a little bleach will hurt him too much…but please try find out what you need to do just in case.

I finally got through to a 24hour vet. They said he should be fine, but i’ll watch to make sure he’s still eating and drinking. I guess the next step is to have a serious conversation with everyone in the household about leaving cleaning supplies around
Thanks for answering my concern! It has been a scary night.

                Is he OK this morning?
I would think plenty of fluids (maybe flavor his water with some apple juice to make it tasty) would help flush it out completely.

That’s so scary! I know the feeling- BunBun has eaten things that he shouldn’t have and once I thought I gave him an overdose of his meds by accident- I felt awful and was a wreck. I was actually reading an older book on rabbits and it advised putting a tiny amount of bleach in rabbits’ water to keep bacteria from growing! So I don’t think it could be terribly toxic- I know it’s not to humans. Not a reccomended drink, but not lethal. I know it’s impossible to relax until you KNOW all is well though. I hope he’s doing fine!

Thank you everyone! My bunny is fine I guess he just had a very small amount, so he never even felt sick (as far as I could see).
I didn’t know a tiny amount of bleach was okay for a bunny’s water. That is a relief, but I don’t think I will try it :p I would be far too paranoid.

Phew! That’s scary! I’m glad you called a vet and got an answer-that must have helped your nerves! (We keep all cleaners on a shelf in the laundry room because we also have a dog and half finished kitchen cabinets-maybe up high will work for you too and get everyone in the house on board )

I know your sharing to help calm J_Rabbity but older books on rabbits are full of horrible advice-so I just wanted to advise, that along side such gems as ‘feeding sunflower seeds and petroleum jelly and sheetrock’ bleach in water probably not ok
