Took Gracie to the vet today.  I swear if no one knew me and saw Gracie they would think she was neglected, the poor thing!  She’s not having a good week.  On Easter we left for my parents home around 1 and came back at 7pm.  As soon as we came in the house it smelled!  I knew it had to be Gracie.  I picked her up and her bum was soaked with urine   It smelled so bad.  It was like she just sat in one spot and peed on herself over and over again.  I washed her up and dried her off the best I could.  The next day I made a vet appt.  Last night she peed on herself again a little and I think this morning too.  I took her today and her poor legs were all red, her feet were a little puffy red too.  So they washed her up and trimmed her the best they could.  She got her ears cleaned and I had the vet look at the back of her throat to check her teeth.  We found out she has “hooks” or well I guess molar spurs on both sides.  She said her cheeks were red so it didn’t look like she was in any discomfort as far as she could tell.  I asked what we could do about them and she said they usually put them out and file them but she is older so there is a risk with putting her under.  She said just to keep an eye on her and make sure she’s eating and everything.  I don’t know if anyone has experience with molar spurs in older rabbits?  She said there wasn’t much we could really do which sucks.  I went to flip her over tonight to rub some silvadene on her and she has cecils on her butt, so I got them off and cleaned her glands which were pretty bad.  I’m going to make a schedule up to check them every week or so to make sure they don’t get dirty again.  I also gave her metacam every day since Easter and I gave her tramadol tonight on her ear for pain relief.  I love her so much, I wish I could do more for her but I just gotta keep her comfortable and clean.

Oh, honey, we know how much you love her. You’re obviously doing everything you can to care for her, and that’s that main thing. You’re a terrific bunny parent, and I don’t think any of us can dispute that after all you’ve been through with poor Gracie.

All you can do is just keep up the care and love you’re giving her and hope that it gets better. In the meantime, we’ll be thinking about you and her <3

Thanks guys, I know I can get a bit emotional with her sometimes.  On Easter I cried a little just seeing her like that   I know I’m doing as much as I can do for her.  It’s hard having an older bun with problems.  But no matter what, I will always take care of her the best I can.  Unless she’s in pain and there’s nothing we can do, I would never put her to sleep just because she has problems with her back legs.  There’s always something I can do.  She has good days where she has so much life in her and she runs like a bullet around the living room, it makes me smile seeing her like that.  She’s just having a bad week, she gets like that sometimes.

Does anyone know anything about molar spurs though?  I’m not sure if this will affect her later on or not?  It’s getting late and I did a little research but not much about it.

I’ll send an email to the RA about it, see if anyone has any ideas.

I’ve had plenty of experience with molar spurs and older rabbits. Why can’t she sedate her? Gracie’s not that old and if her bloodwork looks good then I don’t see a reason this cannot be done. Molar spurs are extremely common in older rabbits due to bone loss when their teeth start shifting.

Filing the spurs will help her feel much better.

One of the volunteers says the same thing Sarita. She recently had a foster bun with teeth issues, and the vet (who is awesome btw) said that he has had to do surgeries on older buns fairly frequently, and as long as bloodwork is good, there shouldn’t be any problem with being put under.

Well I’m not exactly sure how old she is, it was a guess by the rescue that she was 4-5 years old when we got her in 2009 but not sure. Isn’t there always a risk with anesthesia for older animals though? She said that her cheeks weren’t red and it didn’t seem to be causing her pain and just to keep an eye on her. She might not have been as comfortable with sedating an older rabbit (she deals with rabbits but I don’t think she’s AS rabbit savy as the one in Akron). I could always call her vet in Akron to get his thoughts. What is the price range usually for something like that, do you know?

Rucy was an older bunny (older than 4-5) and was having her spurs filed. And this is going to sound repetitive, but they just did bloodwork to make sure she was healthy enough to be sedated. She never had a problem.

Due to the fact blood work has to be done first, it cost me around $200

The only thing I am not understanding is the urination issue being related to the teeth? This didn’t happen with Rucy. Does Gracie have a UTI or what did the vet say the relation was?

I might call her other dr. then and see what he wants to do but I’ll probably wait a little because of the cost.  She’s not in any pain and is eatting like a piggie.  Thanks guys for the help on that!

BB I should have clarified a little, the teeth don’t have to do with her urination.  I just wanted the vet to check them since we were there anyways.  Her urination has to do with her arthritis and that she had EC and the damamges it did to her.  She doesn’t feel as much back there so she had a bad week and just sat in her pee without realizing it.  I’m putting her back on the Metacam every other day to see if that will help.  She hasn’t done anymore.  Also the fact that her fur was longer made it worse when she peed on herself, it soaked it all up.  I should have taken her the week before to get shaved.    She just needed a good bum bath and shave from the vet because I didn’t want anything to get infected and I didn’t have the proper trimmers to shave her.

I know how you feel about the urine soaked fur and skin – it’s a never ending story when they have a disability like this. I remember struggling the same way with Maxine and her arthritis. And Mango now has some of the same issues. It’s definitely a challenge and a frustration but you do the best you can.

I think if she’s eating and drinking fine then her she may not need the molar trim however, it wouldn’t hurt to call the other doctor and consult with him in case she needs a molar trim in the future.

Haha it’s ok!  Back a few months ago our vet was out of ideas and recommended a rabbit savy vet in Akron.  I mean she knows rabbits but she doesn’t work with them all the time like the one in Akron.  So we went there and he diagnosed her with having E.C. when she was younger.  He said that the parasite wouldn’t be in her system anymore but the affects are still there.  She also had a little bit of arthritis.  But with EC she doesn’t have as much feeling in her back end, hence why she would pee and just sit in it because she doesn’t know she did it.  We can’t make her better but just make her comfortable.  So we were giving her metacam every day, then every other day then every two days to the point where he said just when she seems bad (where she would run out of her cage and drag her legs a little).  She’s gotten a lot better to the point where she doesn’t drag her legs but they just seem a bit stiff.  But I think she’s gotten a bit worse and is still dribbling pee on her right side.  So I’m going to bathe her tomorrow and clean her feetsies off and put more silvadene on her skin so it doesn’t get infected.

Ouch, I’m sorry. Bailey had hind leg weakness due to e.cuniculi. It also made it difficult for her to lean on her back legs to clean herself. She was able though to lift up enough to pee, but poopybutt was the constant problem. So I understand. Gracie is lucky to have to have you.

Jersey, I don’t believe so.  I did have a post awhile ago about some calcium in the urine.  She had some thickness in her urine a few times but I haven’t seen anymore of that.  I do have some more bad news tonight.  I was petting her and for some reason felt incline to pet by her jaw for a bit and I felt a lump.  It’s maybe smaller than a marble but bigger than a pea.  It’s on her left and under her jaw line.    I was so upset when I felt the lump.  I’m calling the vet in Akron on Monday and making an appt. ASAP.  She doesn’t deserve to go through all this

Skibunny, I hope all goes well at the vets and that Gracie’s jaw lump is easily treated. I feel so badly reading about all you’re going through. It can be so hard when they get older and different problems start to appear. I remember with my 1st hamster (who have short life spans but I still get really attached) I was in tears almost every day- it’s such a helpless feeling because you just want to make everything better and you can’t. But remember you’re doing a great job with her- it’s obvious that you’re putting everything you have into caring for Gracie and that you love her very much, and she can surely feel that .

Thanks Dee, that’s exactly how I feel with her.  I guess the only thing you can really do for older animals is to keep them comfortable.  I gave her a bath today, it’s a lot better with her shaved but she’s lost a lot of her fur on her right leg from the urine and you can see a lot of skin.  She’s been urinating on herself more.  I won’t be able to get her into the vet until next week because my husband is training for work this week and I don’t want to drive all the way down there by myself.  But I’ll call tomorrow and tell him what’s going on and make an appt.  I’ll keep you guys updated!
