Hi, I have two bunnies. A male and a female. The male is neutered and has been for 6 months now. The female is not spayed yet. We just havent had the money to spay her quite yet and we know it needs to be done. Yesterday, she started pulling out her fur and arranging it around the cage. She is always a lazy bunny, but she has been unusually lazy today. She just wants to sleep and thats it. The male has been taking care of her and trying to make her feel better (as far as I can tell lol). He has been licking her, and cleaning her, and just laying with her all day. I didn’t know if she was having a phantom pregnancy, or if i need to take her to the vet….or if for some reason the neutering of the male was not effective. I havent felt her tummy yet but I will. Any suggestions?

Sounds like she is having a false pregnancy, due to not being spayed.

Did you seperate the male from the female after his neuter? He is able to reproduce after getting neutered for a month.

Agreed with LoveChaCha – it is important to keep the male and female separate for a month after the neuter, because he can still reproduce. This actually did happen to a member here a while ago…her male rabbit impregnated her female rabbit right after he had been neutered. If it’s a false pregnancy, I think all you can do is really wait it out; bunny gestation is about a month so just keep an eye on her.

If somehow his neuter was not complete, then you would have likely seen this happen before now. It is probably a false pregnancy. (Unless they are are allowed outdoors and encountered a intact male). Fur pulling normally happens right before they give birth so this may be the last stage of the false pregnancy. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do except wait it out. Do watch out for aggression toward you or her mate though.

We didn’t bring the female into the family until about 1 1/2 months after his neuter. Thanks for the info, i guess it is just a false pregnancy. I felt her tummy just in case and I didn’t feel any babies in there so I think we’re good. Besides, if he had sperm left over after the neuter, this would have happened a lot sooner, right? lol

I have heard that the sperm can last longer, but really, I would find it extremely rare and I’d be very shocked if she were actually pregnant. I agree that she is probably just going through a false pregnancy. She might be getting a little feisty too as that can be typical if she thinks she preparing for babies, her protective instincts may kick in. — hopefully she isn’t being too grumpy with you.

Oh FYI:  gestation period for a real pregnancy  is around 30 days.

is she still acting preggers? nikka also had a false pregnancy before they were fixed, but she kind of forgot about it and gave up after a few days lol.
