I remember a long time ago, as a little girl. my mother told me this story and I was wondering if it was true or not. She told me that rabbit’s can’t get their tail wet. That if they do they get something called wet tail where the tail falls off, causes dirrera and some other disease. is this true or not. I was alway told to keep a bunnys tail as dry as you can.

I don’t think it’s true. I mean, I’ve had to give both of mine butt baths and they were fine after. lol However….if that area remains wet, it can cause skin irritation which can lead to infections. So maybe that’s where it comes from?

yeah that is what I meant. keeping the tail wet. like if the bunny was in an improper cage and kept knocking over water and all causing the entire area to be wet causing the tail to get and stay wet.

There is an infection called wet tail that hamsters can get. Their tail doesn’t fall off though that I am aware of.

                can this happen with bunnies?

As far as I know, no. It is a bacterial infection that affects hamsters. Rabbits can have a condition that some people call “wet tail”, but it isn’t actually a disease. It is just what some people refer to if the rabbit has runny poops, but that could be caused by a number of things I think.

Wet tail is simply diarhea-one of my guinea pigs got it when I was a kid. I think that must be where she was coming from. Also reminds me-a friend at work has chinchilla’s and apparently if they get wet they get skin rot! Ehhh

Yep, at OHS we are told no open water near the chinchillas, because if they get wet, its almost impossible to dry them off! If they do, we have to call in one of the resident vets.

It’s not the end of the world if a chinchilla gets wet accidentally. You just have to make sure they get dried completely, which can be somewhat difficult.

Well if your rabbit’s tail or bottom are wet it is usually an indication of a urinary tract infection.

Why is it so hard to dry a chinchilla?

chinchilla fur is super dense, with something like 60 hairs sprouting from each hair follicle. it’s crazy how thick it gets. because it is so think, you can’t get all the moisture out of the fur easily.

The nice thing is that their fur is so dense that it is hard for fleas to live in there! Hehe! I miss my little chinchers.

hey about the chinchilla, is that a rabbit or a cousin of the rabbit? just wondering.

Not related at all to bunnies. There is one breed of rabbit that shares the name though

Is there? I thought they were just including the chinchilla in with rabbits for some reason. Yeah…a bit slow on the uptake sometimes, but you all knew that already. LOL

Wet tail is a condition that effects hamsters when they become extremely stressed. I had a gorgeous hamster for a week named Link (Anyone see a trend here? )  Anyway. He got really stressed out and died from wet tail.
