Totally new need help (What kind of bunny is this?)

Hi everyone. I am really really new to bunnies. I just got one today. I know about the hay, pellets, and dandelion leaves and stems they can eat. so I got that. but one thing I don’t know is what kind I have. All I know is that a long time a go, these people’s dad went to Tennesse and came back with some brown bunnies and since then they have been breeding them. but I don’t know what kind it is or the sex. All the bunnies they had today were brown, I got one of the lightest colored ones. The ears stick straight up, and it is only 6wks old. I don’t have a name yet but I do have some pics for you all to help me identify what kind it is. one pic even has my hand in it so you can see how big it is for 6 wks old. I hope you can help me. Here are the pics.

oh and I did do the health check thing and the teeth are great, along with the eyes and nose checks. also I could not determine the sex using this site here

To me it looks like a Velveteen Rex rabbit. If it’s fur is soft and smooth like velvet, then there you go. They’re medium sized rabbits with a relatively good temperament, and they’re SUPER soft :B

yeah this bunny is very calm and all. very, very soft to the touch, but I thought that it was just cause it is a baby. can you help me with the sex? oh and does the fur ghange or remain very soft like this.

you have a beautiful little bunny, I couldn’t tell how small until I saw your hand next to him/her.

Don’t feel bad if you can’t tell the sex……my first bun was supposed to be a boy, the vet said a girl, the next vet said a boy, the third vet prepped “him” for his neuter only to call and tell me Pringles was definitely a girl. And she was 6 months old by then. It’s hard to tell the sexes, even by a vet especially that young.

I had a rex, the fur feels more like suede than “fur” it’s so thick and fine.

Welcome! Your rabbit is gorgeous! If he/she is indeed a Rex rabbit, the fur should remain just as soft into adulthood. There are two kinds of Rex rabbits, the standard kind as well as the mini kind. Standard Rex rabbits grow to be 7-10 lbs, while the mini Rexes grow to be 3-5 lbs; just by looking at baby pictures, it’s very difficult to tell which kind you have, or if you have a Rex at all! Some of these things will become more obvious as the rabbit matures.  Likewise, we can’t really help you with sexing the rabbit…baby rabbits are very difficult to sex and mistakes are made quite often even by experienced people. Your best bet is to take your new rabbit to a local rabbit-savvy vet…in addition to finding out if you have a boy or a girl, you can begin to establish a relationship with your vet in preparation for spaying or neutering in a few months. I am glad you all like my bunny. I hope this one gets along well with with my boxer. He is about 4 mos now and time to go to the vet for his shots. He is very pretty, and brindle at that.
yeah, my dad does photos a lot and I post pics of my bonsai’s so I knew to help you all out I needed to put my hand to the rabbit for size reference. My bunny has been home for about 4 hours now and finally started eating. I don’t have the pellets and hay yet, but it did eat some dandelion leafs and stems and a bit of a carrot. I am getting the hay and pellets tomorrow, or today if I go back up town.

What a beautiful bun. I like the name Oscar and then if it’s a girl Oscarina. My mom’s friend had to name her cat Oscarina since it was a girl and already used to Oscar.

Rabbits do shed quite a bit, but it kind of depends on the rabbit. Some will constantly have a lower level of shedding all through the year, and others go through a heavy molt twice a year. Have you checked out the bunny info link yet? In case you haven’t, here it is:

well right now my bunny is in the house. I believe it is a female. has a big appetite for a small bunny, and very calm and friendly.

adorable! s/he reminds me of a foster bun i once had, a mini rex i named felix. i’ve always loved that name for a rabbit! if it’s a girl, i like willow or saffron. what kind of names do you like? if we know that, maybe we could suggest names that are similar!

At six weeks, I don’t think your bunny should be eating veggies and/or fruit yet. He might be able to be introduced to veggies (starting with something like parsley) in a few more weeks, but slowly and one vegetable at a time to make sure he doesn’t react badly to them (you need to monitor his poop and increase the amount of veggies you give them slowly).

Carrot should be given as a treat I think (so only a little bit at a time) because it’s very sugary.

I got my bunny when he was about 8 weeks and the vet i took him to for his first check up told me I shouldn’t trim his nails for a little while longer. I believe they’re too young at that age for a proper nail trimming but he advised that if the nails were sharp, i could try to file them just a little.

Agree with otti about veggies. 6 weeks is too young to have them. They need to develop the bacteria needed in their tummies first. veggies can upset the balance if given too early.

Can I suggest that you start one thread and keep all of your updates there? It’s too hard for people to keep flip flopping between threads and never getting the entire story. Right now you have 5 different threads on the first page of this sub-forum. I could possibly see if we can combine them all into one somehow.
