I have a male one-year-old neutered Holland Lop with a red, kind of swollen-looking anus with a white spot inside – I also see something yellow in it as well. I’m worried!

We have been keeping him outdoors in a wooden hutch where he can also access and run around in sand. It rained a few days back and he was still playing around – I thought it might be fly strike due to the wetness (we do have flies), but it doesn’t look like it at all. He was having diarrhea yesterday, but he’s fine now. He eats pellets, hay, and sometimes I see him chewing on the wood in the hutch. Could it be an insect bite? Orchitis? Rabbit vent disease? Very confused and worried! Please help!

First you need to get him to a vet to have the vet check this and second, please bring him inside where it’s safe.

I second Sarita’s advice. Rabbits are suspectable to diseases, especially if they are kept outside and it is very dangerous to keep them outdoors.

Diarrhea is never a good indicator, so I hope you will take him to see the vet.

Please update on how he is doing. Were you able to contact your vet?

He is doing fine. He’s acting like his usual self. The pictures were taken yesterday, and there seems to be less swelling today, but there is still the “white stuff” inside the anus. I’m still curious as to what it is, though! Due to Easter, my vet will only be available on Monday. Any thoughts on what it might be? Thanks!

I did have a rabbit that once had vent disease – though there wasn’t that much pus, but just sores and swelling. (and it can spread to the lips and eyes – though it didn’t in my bunny’s case, but I took him to the vet as soon as I noticed the problem) Vent disease can be taken care of via a series of injections over a several weeks. (I think three shots in three weeks, but it was a long time ago so I don’t remember for sure)

Of course, there is absolutely no way for any of us to know for sure. As you mentioned there could be other illnesses that can create these symptoms as well, so you will need to get him to the vet first thing on Monday. And of course watch closely to make sure your bunny doesn’t stop eating or shows any signs of distress on Sunday — It would be good to look up an emergency vet just to be ready if you have to.

                  Keep us updated.
