So, Miles is on the road to recovery from an upper respiratory infection.  Today is his third day of antibiotics and he’s feeling much better … sneezing less, etc.  He has dried yuckiness on his front paws from wiping discharge from his nose, and the vet has advised me to keep his paws clean so I can tell if there’s more or less getting caked on there.  I’ve tried to clean them with warm water on a wash cloth, and he let me hold him and do this a few times, but now he won’t have it.  I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to get him clean?  I was thinking about maybe putting warm water in a shallow plastic bin and putting him in there… Maybe the water will loosen the yuck and make it easier for him to clean it off himself?  I feel so bad that he has dirty feet!

Having him sit in warm water for a few minutes should help loosen it up. If you are able to, just put his paws in the water. When bathing rabbits, you only want to wet whichever part needs to be cleaned as bathing stresses most rabbits out. They can also chill very easily. Don’t use any soap or shampoo and immediately dry him as much as you can once you’re finished. And don’t be surprised if you get thumped and foot flicked.

And if you do put his feet in water, make sure to dry them as much as you can, and don’t let him near any drafts or open windows or go outside for at least 24 hours. it really does take that long for bunnies to dry off completely, and you don’t want him getting a chill

Thanks so much! I’m going to do this right away, and make sure I dry him off completely

Okay, I wish I had gotten video of that. It was the CUTEST THING ever. I took a big tupperware-type container and put maybe 1/2 of an inch of warm water in it, scooped him up, and put him in there. The water was just enough to cover his feet but not hit his belly. He sort of stood there, confused, and then went to groom his front paws, found they were wet, and shook them to flick all the water off. He did this a couple times before I decided to pull him out and dry him off in a towel I’d warmed up in the dryer for a few minutes beforehand. Miles is dry, he doesn’t hate me, and the gunk is more or less gone! Success!

Further update… I left the water thingy out and he just jumped into it. TWICE! He’s insane!

LOL Maybe he likes water?! A very few rabbits do! Glad it went well. I’ve had to give Lolli some butt baths and while she didn’t love them, I could always tell she felt a lot better afterwards.

Hmmm….maybe he thought it was a litterbox or just a box he could hang out in, and just couldn’t see the water (rabbits don’t have great eyesight) What did he do once he jumped in the water on his own?

I’m glad you were able to get his front paws clean of the gunk. I know exactly what you are talking about because a previous bunny of mine, Rucy, had eye nose issues due to her teeth and a blocked tear duct. Anyway, when she wouldn’t cooperate, I would use the burrito method, but keep her front paws out and use warm wet washcloth to get the dried gunk off.

BB – The first time he went in on his own, he jumped right out… But then he went RIGHT back in! It’s like it startled him at first, but then he was into it? Who knows!

                          Bunnies are so perplexing.
