My lionhead, Cruz, puts his head down when I scratch between his ears or by his cheeks.  He literally flattens his head on the floor and he makes that grinding noise.  I know the grinding noise can mean he’s happy but I’ve also heard it can mean he’s mad/scared.  It’s not super loud but I can definitely hear it.  I’m just trying to figure out if I’m making him happy or freaking him out.  I just adopted him about a week ago so I’m not quite used to what he likes and what he doesn’t.

If it’s a soft grinding, it’s a purr which is what that is. You will be able to tell when it’s pain – it will be just one of many symptoms in a sick bunny.

That sounds like a toothpurr to me! Generally means they’re happy little bunnies!

Lolli sometimes has a loud grind/teeth clattering when I’m snuggling with her. She’s very happy to be getting pets, so I know she’s fine. You will be able to tell with time, but my bunnies have always looked like they didn’t feel good as well as continually grinding their teeth. I would say he’s very happy to be getting petted!

Gabby does this every night when I’m rubbing her head. She puts her head to the ground and wants me to pet up her forehead, between her ears and on the sides of her face. Sometimes she does the tooth purr sound. I’ve always taken it that she really likes it and wants mama to keep massaging her.

He likes it. If he were in pain, so the grinding was louder, he also would not sit there flattened and let you touch him around his face. He would either run away if you touched a sensitive spot while petting him, or be huddled in a corner or sitting in a meat loaf position and not be active.

You are bonding well with him.

with rats, we call it bruxing, and it’s a happy noise.  that’s how i’ve been thinking of it when rue does it. i love the way she puts her head down and settles in for a nice long session of lovin’!
