My kids say there is a very small, short-eared bunny hiding in our wood pile on our back porch.  My son swears (in a good way) that it’s not a jack-rabbit, but I haven’t seen him so I’m not sure.  He had to have come under one of the three gates in our back yard since the whole thing is surrounded by a six-foot brick wall.  My question is if we should try to rescue him and how do we go about doing that?  I want to make sure he’s not a jack rabbit, since if it was, he’d be basically ok on his own.  However, if he’s a domestic type of rabbit, he won’t last long out in the open.  Any suggestions would be welcomed.  Thanks.

It is baby bunny season, so most likely s/he is just leaving the nest to start out on his/her own. If you could get a picture of the bunny, that would help. Also, where do you live? What types of wild bunnies live in your area? There might be smaller species than jack rabbits.

Okay, I did see him run across the yard back under the wood pile a little bit ago. I think maybe he is a wild rabbit because of his coloring; light brown with a white tail. He went by pretty fast, but it looked familiar because of the tail. Being so little, maybe his face hasn’t grown into the thin, pointy sort of shape the wild rabbits around here have. We live in a high-altitude desert climate where wild rabbits are fairly common, especially in our neighborhood where the houses are on one-acre + lots, lots of dirt, scrub pinon and juniper, and plenty of desert grasses and tumble weeds (sounds heavenly, huh? lol). I’m thinking he found the jack pot when he came under our gate since the x-scaping yard plants are starting to turn green. I just hope none of the hawks or cats get him. Will still try to get a photo of him though. Thanks : )
