        Hi Guys,

Just wanted to ask a couple of questions. I have been using a water bottle with Zelda for the last two days. When I was cleaning her cage out, I realised the water bottle doens’t seen to be dispensing water easily. And I was wondering why Zelda was spending ages at her bottle! SoI gave her a small plastic bowl of water and she immediatly went up to it and started drinking. I feel bad, I had no idea it wasn’t working right.

So I checked out the bottle, turns out it wasn’t tilted up enough. I’m concerned that when I put her to bed (she gets quite upset, I woke this morning to see she had moved her wooden house right across the cage!) that she’l spill it everywhere. I was going to leave her with the bottle at night, but I’m not sure if I trust it.

One other thing, is it safe for rabbits to chew on 100% cotton towels? She seems to love playing with bunched up face towels!

My bunnies prefer bowls to the bottles. Should be fine to leave a bowl in her cage

As for towels, if she isn’t actually eating the fabric, it should be fine for her to dig and chew at it. My Moose loves chewing his towels, he chews little bits off of it, then drops it. So if Zelda is doing that, and not ingesting the fabric, should be fine

Yes, my rabbits use bowls only as well – I like them better as well because for me they are easier to clean and freshen up. I think it’s also more natural for rabbits to drink from bowls rather than bottles.

I only use a bowl for Gabby. She’s not in a cage anymore so a bowl is easier to put in her room.

Mine use a bowl – I make sure to put it somewhere out of the way where they’re less likely to binky through it or get hay in it. You can buy bowls that clip to the side of the pen so they’re impossible to tip over. I used bottles with gerbils for years and those darn things always leaked and didn’t work well. I definitely prefer bowls now.

Also, if you’re worried about the towel (since they have threads in them that bunnies could get stuck in their teeth) you can buy fleece. I get fleece by the yard and then cut it up into a couple smaller pieces and it works well.

I don’t like bottles as much because there’s so many parts that can be difficult to clean and quite often damp – I could imagine mold growing after a little bit. Water bowls do require more constant upkeep because they tend to get more loose fur/hay (and the occasional poop!) thrown in, but just rinse it out and refill regularly and it should be fine . It might help if you find a heavier water dish so Zelda can’t fling it around as easily.  I went through a phase with Peppy where we were constantly locked in a battle: she wanted to tip over all her bowls and wreak havoc, and I was trying to come up with new ways to prevent her from doing so.  It took several rounds of innovation and defeat, but I prevailed in the end, hah!  It can be tricky figuring things out with crafty bunnies…

Great! What I’ll do is leave the bowel in the cage for tonight and see how we get on. I’ll leave the bottle on the side anyway incase there’s any issues.

She isn’t eating the towel from what I can tell, it’s just chewing… I think!
